4.0 out of 5 stars Big improvement on previous model, 2 Sep 2005
I had a troublesome Linksys WAG54G which Linksys recently replaced with a newer WAG354G.

The new unit is noticeably smaller than its predecessor. However the web interface very similar, and therefore just as easy to configure. I was initially dubious about the similarities though, given the problems I'd had with the earlier model.

Firstly, the good news. The wireless connection is consistently stable, and despite the lack of an external aerial, does not drop out after prolonged use. So the thermal problems that many people experienced with the WAG54G appear to have been resolved. The device is ready for ADSL2, meaning it's ready for connections faster than 8mb, if you are fortunate enough to have this speed connection available. The customary 4-port switch is built in too.

Now the bad news, perhaps. If you want to set up a PPTP VPN connection, this router still does not do what it says on the tin: The GRE protocol required for PPTP to work is still being blocked by the built-in firewall.

Overall impression: A much improved device from Linksys, and one that I am now (mostly) happy with. I suspect anyone that does not have my requirement to operate a VPN will be very satisfied with it.

As an aside, the full source code for the router's firmware is available on the Linksys website under the GPL licence, for those that are inclined to tinker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy & works!, 18 Mar 2006
Bought this on the strength of some of the other reviews here and as it's owned by Cisco it must be a reasonable bit of networking kit.
Unpacked it and set it up & had a fully working 128 bit WEP secure network within 20 minutes consisting of 2 pcs & a laptop.
The laptop gets a full strength signal all over the house.
I'd recommend this to anyone who's unsure about setting up a wireless network!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wireless Internet access that works all round the house, 1 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I wanted a wireless device to share my ADSL connection between several family computers. I bought the Linksys device after reading the reviews on many wireless modem/routers which made me very nervous - plenty of bad experiences with difficult set-up, poor range and intermittent behaviour. However I am pleeased to say that the Linksys product lived up to my expectations and confirmed the previous reviews of the WAG354G product - straightforward to set up and good wireless coverage throughout my 4-bedroomed house. It works fine with a Dell wireless laptop and with a desktop via a Belkin adaptor.
I did run into one configuration problem (the VC value) which prevented access to the internet through my ISP (BT), however a call to the Linksys helpline at 11.15pm had it resolved in less than 3 minutes - very impressive. I have not explored the security features of the product as yet - just pleased to get multiple wireless access from several home computers. I can also confirm that access is noticeably faster than my previous BT Voyager modem.

One niggle is that the UserGuide is presented as a single PDF book for all languages - one per language would be easier to navigate. And it would be helpful to have a set of the standard configurations for the main ISPs. Finally, I paid £60 - so at £50 I would recommend it as good value.
