At last count, there were just under 5 million Indie bands trying to make their way in the music business. Most of them are pretty interchangeable, singing the same sort of songs about not being able to get laid or messing up their exams by writing poetry. So, it's a moderately pleasant surprise to find a band that's a bit different.

Granted, Holopaw's difference is best illustrated in that, like Lambchop, there seem far more members than the gentle music would suggest. On 'Quit +/or Fight', this is particularly obvious. There's only 1 song that could charitably be called a 'rocker' (the splendid "3-shy-cubs") and most of the rest of the album is taken up with a guitar gently chiming, a keyboard gently droning, a bass gently plucking and drums being gently thwacked. Over all of this is singer John Orth's vocals; gently quavering every last syllable until your whole body is almost quavering along in sympathy.

Yes, this album is rather gentle. To the extent that when they do attempt to rock out a bit (the second half of 'Velveteen', parts of 'Little Shaver'), the reaction is one of "Ah, bless" rather than "Wow!"

The main problem with all this is that the album never really gets going. Having a few slower songs on an album like this is not a bad thing, but having too many leaves it feeling a little flat; and that's what happens here.

Still, it's not a bad album. The lyrics are cryptic enough to sustain some interest, the vocal harmonies are better than most bands can manage and the songs are kept simple and short. So, like I say, not a bad album, but with so many Indie bands out there, it's debatable whether that's enough to justify buying this.
