Product Description

Documentary about the making of the notorious porn feature 'Deep Throat' (1972), and the resulting controversy that saw the film being banned in 23 American states, as well as the effect this had on the social and sexual revolutions of the era. Narrated by Dennis Hopper and featuring interviews with commentators such as Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer, Erica Jong, Camille Paglia and Hugh Hefner, as well as the filmmakers Gerard Damiano and Ron Wertheim.

From Amazon.co.uk

While Boogie Nights showed pornography's transition from sleazy cinemas to home-video dominance, Inside Deep Throat looks back to the film that introduced porn to a curious mainstream public. Released in 1972 and starring 23-year-old Linda Lovelace as sexpot whose oral sex skills (performed on well-endowed co-star Harry Reems) gave the film its title (and, subsequently, the nickname of Watergate's secret informant), Deep Throat set a cultural milestone as a source of controversy, outrageous profit (mostly for its Colombo mob family financiers), and irrevocable social change. With equal parts nostalgia and historical hindsight, this briskly-paced documentary places Deep Throat in pivotal context, when Vietnam was an acknowledged disaster and American innocence was peeling away one layer at a time. Produced by Hollywood honcho Brian Grazer and catering to viewers who were too young to witness Deep Throat's impact firsthand, the film includes the legendary fellatio scene that made Lovelace an overnight sensation, but it's the interviews with pop-culture VIP's like Norman Mailer, Dick Cavett, Hugh Hefner and (most amusingly) Helen Gurley Brown that add necessary perspective to what is, for better and worse, an engaging but somewhat shallow examination of a culture war that never really ended. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Documentary about the making, release and aftermath of 1972's Deep Throat, which would make a great bonus feature on that movie's DVD release, and features entertaining interviews with director Gerard Damiano. As a theatrical release though, its scope is unsatisfyingly narrow. It's a decent enough introduction to 70's hardcore cinema, but contains little in the way of exciting new revelations. I can't help feeling that the "based on true events" fiction of Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights dug deeper.

Entertaining if not super deep exploration of the 70s social and sexual
phenomenon in the USA that was 'Deep Throat'. The film
was the first to cross over from men in raincoats in tiny
theaters to a much more mainstream crowd male and female crowd,
with celebrities and film critics queuing up to see it.

Frequently funny, occasionally sad and pathetic, sometimes infuriating
(as in the aggressive criminal prosecution of poor Harry Reems simply
for acting in the film).

I don't know that there are any really deep insights here, and the film
skirts a lot of more interesting elements it could have explored (e.g.
the mafia's involvement with porn at the time) but it's fun and fast
moving.

BTW - for those of you looking for a porn film turn on, move along
there's nothing to see here. Yes, there are a few seconds of Ms. Lovelace
performing the title feat, but the film really is a documentary, not
porn masquerading as one. Interesting yes, hot, no.

I bought this uncut in Germany on Region 2 with German packaging and was surpised to find it included the film Uncut as a extra.
It was also released like this in France and Austria, so why not the UK?
We get a edited Documentry and have to buy the film very badly edited and stupidly cut seprate.
We seem to be ruled by prudes.
Well lets hope they change their minds in the Future.

Marketed as a documentary, this is in point of fact merely non-fictional entertainment a 'documentary', according to its historical definition it is not. That established we can move forward and evaluate this film as such.

Deep Throat defines a peculiar episode in America's popular culture and begs to be dissected against a backdrop of political, cultural, moral, social and artistic appropriation and significance. Unfortunately this film comes nowhere near to completing or even tackling such a noble task. Instead it simply sets out to provide a brief chronology of the film and it's main players and then seeks to paint a very superficial and somewhat biased wash over the film and it's subsequent oppression and persecution under Federal Law.

In all honesty, before they loaded the camera with film, I doubt the filmmakers had established a coherent brief or rationale they intended to pursue. Neither does it appear that they had a defined set of objectives, goals and truths they wished to explore. There is therefore, subsequently, an enormous sense of lack of cohesion and ultimately a clear absence of a defining central thesis to this work, something which ultimately has a very negative impact on the quality of the film.

Rather like the assassination of JFK, Deep Throat (the film) leaves us with more questions than answers. Questions that over time blur, fade and become all the more difficult to answer. As people pass away and memories fade - as fiction morphs into popular fact, so the ultimate Truth becomes even harder to distinguish. Sadly this film really does very little to address those questions and truths, and indeed really only serves to take us further away from discovery and ultimate closure.

for me,this was an interesting look at arguably the most famous porn film ever made, and its repercussions, not just in the pornography industry, but in society in general.it became a cultural phenomena and polarized America when it came to the issue of freedom of expression and censorship and touched off a revolution.its impact can still be felt today.and no matter which side of the debate you sit on,this film certainly will get you talking.i found the film fascinating,to say the least.i viewed the NC17 version, which obviously is a bit more explicit than the R rated version.i would recommend this documentary just based on it's historical value.for me,Inside Deep Throat is a 4.5/5
