4.0 out of 5 stars Great performances - inappropriate presentation, 3 Dec 2006
By Paul Banks (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Rachmaninov's recordings are one of the great treasures of the recording heritage, offering interpretations of both his own music and that of others that combine outstanding technical mastery with the insights of a composer. For that reason alone, these discs - which on one level represent outstanding value for money - are well worth acquiring.
But the presentation by Sony seems to betray a lack of respect towards both the recordings and purchasers. These are all historic recordings made between the 1920s and the 1940s and therefore deserve decent documentation, so that the listener can evaulate what s/he hears. As a matter of course most record companies would indicate the place and date of the original recordings (often with other information about the recording if it is available) but this is completely absent in the documentation of this set, so you will have to work out for yourself which are the acoustic and which the electric recordings. You will also need to know that, for example, Beethoven's Op. 30 no. 3 is a violin sonata, because the track listing doesn't tell you that, or that a violinist (Kreisler) is involved (you have to go to the last page of the listings to work that out). The six page note tells you nothing specific about any of the recordings, and the engineers involved in the (perhaps over-processed) transfers are not identified. And the big companies have argued for the extension of copyright in recordings! This sort of presentation is a powerfull piece of evidence against the proposal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Set, 3 Jan 2009
By J. Gibbons (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Whilst agreeing with your previous reviewer that the lack of proper documentation is a fault with this set, the relevant information is readily available elsewhere and, quite honestly, doesn't greatly detract from the enjoyment and value of this set of Rachmaninov's recordings for both the Edison and Victor companies.

In total they give a superb picture of the man who was probably the last of the great composer-interpreters of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Rachmaninov's claims as a fine composer are now well established and this set contains what surely are definative performances of the four piano concertos, the Paganini Rhapsody and a large number of solo pieces. They are superbly played, well recorded for the time, and still provide the benchmark against which all other versions must be judged.

Racmaninov was also a superb interpreter of other composers. His Chopin, Schumann, and Beethoven are quite wonderful and his playing of various shorter pieces by a variety of composers full of the insight of fellow composer. His technique was superb but this virtuosity was never for its own sake but always subservient to the music.

Also included are some sonatas played with Kreisler and, also, a fascinating disc of him conducting his own orchestral music.

The historical value of this set is enormous but, what is sometimes forgotten, the music making is no period piece but of such quality as to provide great enjoyment and continual satisfaction to anybody who loves great music and can put up with less than perfect sound.

The remastering has been well done and the price very reasonable. Buy and enjoy!
