This is a splendid reissue that collects together the Bach recordings Wanda Landowska made in New York and Connecticut between 1946 and her death in 1959.

The bulk of the collection (5 CD's) is made up of both books of the 'Well-Tempered Clavier'. This is a wonderful performance; full of insight and sensitivity it shows how Landowska had become completely at one with the music in all its varying moods. This work is, of course, greater than any one interpretation but this recording is certainly one of the finest preserved on disc.

The other two CD's contain Landowska's second recording the Goldberg Variations. This is better recorded than her pioneering version recorded in Paris in 1933 but, perhaps, is not quite so inspired; slightly more 'studied' in fact.

Also incuded are various other works and recordings of those of the Two and Three Part Inventions she completed before her death. Once again these are fine performances - the Vivaldi arrangement (BWV 972) being especially inspired.

Everything was recorded on Landowska's massive steel framed Pleyel harpsichord. I have grown to love the sound over the years but, of course, this is not 'authentic' and will not be to every listener's taste. These are performances very much of their time but the quality of the music making is so great that they continue to live and inspire after nearly half a century.

The remastering is generally very good but the booklet notes are cursory. There is nothing about the music; only a short biographical note on Landowska, a track listing, and very brief discographical details. This set is very reasonably priced and will give much pleasure. Highly recommended.
