Almost perfect debut album from a very promising band!, 12 Jan 2006
I discovered this under-rated band from Finland after completing the terrific 'Max Payne 2', and hearing the mellow 'Late Goodbye' on the end credits. I'm sure many other POTF fans found them this way too. I was hooked straight away. After finally getting international distribution , I purchased the album. And I was not disappointed, in fact, I was surprised in how good it was! Apart from the quality of the music, another strong point of POTF is that they are different. A mature and genuine band who don't seem to have made music simply to cater to a specific style. The closest classification I could give them would be 'Soft rock' with many elements from other genre's thrown in. Here's my track-by-track review: 1 - Lift: This grows on you. Brilliant verse, catchy although slightly cheesy chorus and an amazing guitar solo! 4/5 2 - Overboard: Very good tune. Not the best but by no means at all bad. 3.5/5 3 - Late Goodbye: First mellow track. Catchy chorus. Very nice and calming, although slightly depressing. 4/5 4 - Don't Mess With Me: An attempt at an aggressive song. Grows on you, decent tune. I'm particularly fond of the drums on this track. 3/5 5 - 3AM: Probably the best on the album. A beautiful song! I can't get enough of it. A definite 5/5! 6 - Stay: Starts off quite good, let down slightly by the chorus. But still reasonably good. 2.5/5 7 - Seek You Out: Another stand out track, although not quite up there with the 3 best, it is very good. Very catchy chorus. 4.5/5 8 - Shallow: A good, mellow song yet it doesn't quite stand out, a bit too slow. 2.5/5 9 - Everything Fades: 2nd of the 3 best tracks! Brilliant, upbeat and catchy. Ambient verses that burst into a rocky chorus. 5/5 10 - Someone Special - Another mellow track. This is very strange, starting with a very average intro and verse but sliding into a beautiful chorus with a nice little piano riff making this song different yet nice. 3/5 11 - Illusion & Dream: Not at all bad. A very competent song, yet it doesn't really stand out. 2.5/5 12 - Sleep: Last but not least, the beautifully hypnotising 'Sleep'. The 3rd of the 3 best tracks. As over-used as I have made this word there is nothing else for this song other than beautiful! A calm, mellow track played entirely on piano. Can literally make you feel sleepy, because it is so relaxing and enchanting. 5/5 Now the album is obviously not perfect, (I don't think there is a 'perfect' album in the world) but the reason I gave this album 5 stars is that every song is either good, or much better than good. The lower ratings on some of the tracks are affected by the astonishing stand out tracks. Every song is listenable, even repeatedly. POTF are one of the best bands and 'Signs Of Life' is one of the best albums I've come across in a long time. They are well worth keeping an eye out for in the future. And the album is a more than worthy purchase! A must for anyone's music collection.
