The first series of "Caroline in the City" was extremely well-written, with laughs all around and the interesting slowly-rising sexual tension between Caroline and her assistant, Richard. Comparing these early episodes to current American sitcom fare will make it very obvious why the genre is considered to be dying.

The episodes are presented fullscreen in their original aspect ratio, but the main problem with this set is that the episodes are presented by Production Number instead of by Original American Airdate, and as such, there are many apparent continuity errors. They even list some of these continuity errors as a "Special Feature," when in reality, they just failed to research which episode order would result in the proper sequence of events. For example, even the change in the show's opening credits should've alerted the makers of this set that the third episode they placed on Disc One belongs much later in the series.

For those watching this set for the first time, this is the proper viewing order:

1. Pilot
2. Caroline and the Mugger
3. Caroline and the Gay Art Show
4. Caroline and the Bad Back
5. Caroline and the ATM
6. Caroline and the Folks
7. Caroline and the Opera
8. Caroline and the Balloon
9. Caroline and the Convict
10. Caroline and the Christmas Break
11. Caroline and the Gift
12. Caroline and the Married Man
13. Caroline and the 28 Pound Walleye
14. Caroline and the Watch
15. Caroline and the Condom
16. Caroline and the Bad Date

Please do yourself a favor and take the time to watch the episodes in this order. It'll really make this first series of "Caroline in the City" a lot more enjoyable.

On a side note, if you're a fan of "Gilmore Girls," be on the look out for Lorelai Gilmore herself, Lauren Graham, on this show. You'll see her in a very different light - and you'll probably never be able to sit through an episode of "Gilmore Girls" again without a little chuckle.

Yup the episode sequencing is annoying especially if you want to just want to put a disk in and watch the shows (but it does give it the feeling of watching the shows on the Paramount Comedy Channel).

Plus they box the disks by putting all 3 onto a single spindle is a bit worrying for their longevity (maybe I need to invest in a 3 DVD case)

The quality of transfer is okay not as poor as others have claimed it looks to have been originally filmed on Video Tape which probably explains some of the fuzzyness but its better than the Hill Street Blues (series 1) transfer

But if you enjoyed CITC when it was originally shown then this is a good set to go for

I don't really like writing negative reviews of dvd's, because they are usually based on personal opinion. This is the exception.

This is the most shoddily produced dvd I have ever bought.

Firstly 3 discs on 1 spindle. I dunno how long they will last before being scratched. A terrible way to package your dvd's.

The show itself is decent enough, nothing groundbreaking or overly clever, but excellent to just put on and not have to think for 30 minutes. I enjoy the show (which is why I bought the dvd)

Now onto the reason this set is such a waste of money.

Some episodes have out of synch sound! I don't mean by a fraction of a second either, I am talking about 3-4 seconds. There will be a closeup of a male character talking and you will hear a female voice saying the lines from 3 seconds ago!

It is impossible to enjoy the show like this, and I have never purchased a dvd with this problem before. I have tried this on 4 different dvd players, different brands and everything - the problem still remains.

Now on to 2 smaller gripes. The episodes are out of order (and by a long way)

One episode 2 characters are dating each other. The next they have been broken up for weeks. The next they are back together like nothing changed. Surely it isn't hard to put the episodes in order!

The last thing I hate is more of a personal pet peeve. The 'pilot' episode is listed as a special feature on the case, and is under the 'special features menu'.

The pilot is not a special feature, it is the first episode of the series. If I bought a 'complete first series' set which did not have the pilot then I would return it immediately.

I am sick and tired of dvd's having made up special features just to make it seem like you are getting value for money.

I only paid about £5 for my copy, so there is no point in going through the hassle of returning it, but you should not buy this at any cost!

If you are a massive fan of this show then still don't buy it, because this is a rip-off.
