5.0 out of 5 stars A trip down Barbary Lane!, 29 Dec 2005
By Mrs. V. Forrester "sparkly" (monifieth, angus) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Watching the series on dvd after seeing it aired on television some years back, you feel as if you're in the company of old friends!, honest but shockable Mary Ann, the panto hiss Beecham, and the wonderful Anna Madrigal. I put it on thinking I would only watch one episode but ending up watching the whole series. It's fantastic, a real slice of San Francisco in the 70's, the characters so real and beautifully played in their parts by Olympia Dukakis, Laura Linney,Chloe Webb and Paul Gross to name a few.
The only tiny flaw is on epidode 3, the character of Norman and Dorothea are'nt fully explained so you have to run with it and I felt that could be confusing if you had'nt seen it before.
Anyway suffice to say, I'm going to order series two and continue my indulgence of all of those who live in Barbary Lane and their friendships! and suggest you do the same!

5.0 out of 5 stars woo, 11 Mar 2006

Finally it's been released here after how many years of waiting for fans!
Like the review below says, this is an amazing tv prog.
If you like the books, don't hesitate about getting these, the actors fit the roles 100 percent and it's true to the book for the most part, any changes in the story are minimal and fit really well. Watch out for the extra bits with Mother Mucca, they're great.
Thank goodness for Armistead Maupin!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem!, 9 Jun 2008
By H. D. Spiliotis - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

A hidden gem for me as I came across to it by chance! However, as the character Mrs Madriga says "you don't choose Barbary Lane, it choses you".

An amazing combination of "Sex and the city" and "Queer as Folk", with the only difference that it is their predecessor by a decade or more. Also, it is more political, poetic and romantic focusing on the life experiences and the struggles of its characters, rather than the latest Manolo Blahnik or the new Prada collection as highlights in someone's life.

I couldn't recommend this DVD more. Flirts with the quality of a Tennessee Williams theatrical play, but in a more openly gay and liberated way as it is the city itself.

Every character is capturing but "Mouse" played by Marcus D'Amico will steal your heart.
