It comes as no shock to learn that William Alwyn was a successful composer of film scores. His symphonies, with their lush, post-Romantic idiom and melodramatic gestures sometimes sound more like a soundtrack than an abstract composition. However, although Alwyn my not be in the same calibre as his fellow Northampton-born composer Edmund Rubbra, it would be a mistake to understimate his considerable talent.

The Second Symphony is a particularly fine work, rich in thematic material which is well-argued and ultimately very rewarding. Anyone who cares about Twentieth Century British symphonic music should buy this recording for the Second Symphony alone.

The Fifth Symphony is less engaging, but has the virtue of brevity. The final piece - Lyra Angelica - makes a very good first impression that, in my opinion, quickly dulls.
