5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning !, 13 Aug 2005
I only discovered the works of John Foxx over the last couple of years and the Cathedral Oceans "suite" is amongst his best and most challenging work.

Volume 1 was good, Volume 2 was better but this latest offering is magnificent.

The opening track "Oceanic" is quite simply one of the most stunning, atmospheric, beautiful, relaxing and uplifting pieces of music I have EVER heard ... the album then ebbs and flows between calmer and quieter numbers and more uplifting and dynamic pieces, all beautifully produced and utterly relaxing.

It's certainly NOT background music - each piece is beautifully structured and layered, but while certainly not forced on the listener, it just demands to be listened to.

If you've had a hectic day and are looking to "drift" away, this album is absolutetly perfect to listen to, or simply to chill out to at any time.

This is to date the BEST album of 2005 without a shadow of a doubt. John Foxx continues to push the boundaries of this genre of music and shows that he is still the master of ambient music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the three...., 4 April 2006
By John David Charles Hilton "Creative spark...." (Redcliffe, Bristol United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Cathedral Oceans is an ongoing pet project of John Foxx. This is the most rewarding of the three CDs so far released. It takes the original concept and deepens it still further. This is not pop music and, unlike collections of pop songs, works best when listened to as an entirety, a single, multi-part work. At times it recalls the glorious slow passages of Bach's choral works, at others it is reminiscent of Gloria Coates or Olivier Messiaen. The mixture of synthesiser textures and Foxx's wordless vocals is a magical brew that repays repeated listening...

As with the previous two volumes (now available as a 2CD set), it is possible to treat this work as background music but, to receive the full beauty of the work requires closer listening.

However, I agree with previous reviewers that this takes the original concept about as far as it can go. If John Foxx is to continue the series, he needs to radically rethink his approach and bring in new elements, lest he start to repeat himself....

4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars... A real delight to listen!, 3 Aug 2005
I have already previous volumes,1 and 2, of Cathedral oceans. And I think it's the better one in the three. Both before are good, but this one is so pleasant for the ears...(sorry for my english, I usually speak french, from Canada). Really nice keyboards layers...floating.....often like a symphony. The first piece(Oceanic) and Harmonia Mundi are so melodic and beautiful! Start your day when you don't rush to go working with this CD.A real nice and smooth beginning with your coffee on a day when you can take your time to relax and listen to this music. Have a real nice beginning on an holiday.....a little celestial voyage.
