5.0 out of 5 stars Still funny 30 years later!, 21 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I was 12 years old when this second series was first shown. I enjoyed it then and I enjoyed it now. It is very funny and I find it on a par with Dad's army with its writing and some superb acting, practically 'sergeant major shut up' and Michael Bates who plays Ranji. However the PG classification is justified as some parents may frown at the solders dressing up as women even if it is in the context of an army concert party putting on a show for solders in an army transit camp. There are race and social class relationships not only between the British and Indians but between the British themselves dealt with in such a way that everyone social group is equally lampooned. Showing the flag deals with the relationship in 1945 between the British in India as does the natives are revolting. Sergeant major 'shut up' (Windsor Davis) is very funny with his constant attempts to get the 'puffs' (as he puts it) in the concert party posted up the jungle and to turn the concert party into real solders which is the main theme. His plans hardly ever come to off and when they do in 'Down in the jungle' not only the equally scheming concert party, Camp officers and the Indian staff come up on top again. The Indian staff of the camp are an essential element that make the show work and always play some part or are instrumental in the scheming wherever it comes from particularly Ranji. The curse of the Sadhu sees sergeant major 'shut up' cursed by an Indian holy man resulting in mayhem. Has anyone seen my Cobra sees the sergeant major come off worse again, you almost feel sorry for him by the end of the of the 8 shows on the disk.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Comedy, 20 May 2006
Even funnier now than the first time for me, I was probably a bit young to appreciate the earlier series. Often compared with Dads Army this is a different style of comedy not quite as homely (no pun) as Dads Army, the comedy has a genuine streak of real army slightly sadistic humour, I even used some of Sgt maj's catchlines during my own army career. There are issues that may be deemed not PC in the current climate and thats why the series has not been repeated on terrestrial TV which is a shame as not malice or insult was ever meant. Although many of the individual characters were not as strong as the Dads Army cast the stereotypes of Officers, Sgt Majs and conscripts works very well. The other 6 series all follow a similar theme of the Sgt Maj trying to turn a bunch of poofs into real soldiers but for me the antics just get more engaging rather than samey. If you find military style humour funny then Ain't Half Hot Mum is probably the funniest military based TV ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Windsor Daviesisimperial in many senses of the word, 30 Mar 2007

Brilliant vintage British comedy..similarly themed but very distinct from Dad's Army. Windsor Davies as the sadistic Sergeant Major is perfectly cast and he is helped by the 'pseudo Indian' Micheal Bates.I loved every ending of the episodes where you can hear Bates singing 'Land of Hope and Glory' only to hear the very loud 'Shut Up' from Davies.
