Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the nicest possible sense, Glaswegian colossi Simple Minds were once U2's greatest adversaries and had the sales statistics to prove it. But it was Bono who got to meet the Pope and save the world while Jim Kerr opened a sushi restaurant. If that doesn't sound fair then it's because it isn't. Black And White 050505 sounds no less effectual than anything Simple Minds produced as globe-straddling aristocrats of late Eighties rock--comparisons with their earlier post-New Wave output is another matter entirely--with only Jim Kerr's intermittent although faithfully characteristic melodrama suggesting the band dates from a time when grand gesturing meant bums on seats and lighters in air.

It would be crass folly to class Black And White 050505" as a return to form merely because the belatedly-released "lost" album Our Secrets Are The Same and 2003's Cry had much more to recommend them than vain commentators would ever give them credit for. So what's the score here ? Top drawer pop embellished with love and money lavishment; "Stay Visible", "Home"( like a mature Interpol) and the resurrected "Jeweller" meriting particular distinction. But perhaps the blue riband should be granted to downer epilogue "Dolphins"; sentimental, atmospheric, gripping and what Bowie would have sounded like with an aching concern for the preservation of marine biology. Beached whales? Simple Minds sound like sleeping giants. They ain’t dead yet. --Kevin Maidment

From the Label

Simple Minds were the most successful Scottish band of the 80's. In an epic lifespan of 25 years and total worldwide album sales of 30 million, Simple Minds have come a very long way from the mean streets of Glasgow, evolving into an epic-sounding world-class band playing the biggest arenas in the world. Jim Kerr and co-founder Charlie Burchill are back with a brand new studio album and sounding every bit as good as the height of their fame. Mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain (Roxy Music, Rolling Stones, INXS) Black and White is a very strong, contemporary album. Its anthemic, epic sound embodies everything the band were ever revered for--this is Simple Minds at their best!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a return to form, 10 Nov 2005
I've had this cd for barely a week and already it's a firm favourite. It contains everything which is great about Simple Minds. From the haunting guitar, through to the dynamic bass and unique vocal style, this is truely a classis. It harks back to early albums such as sons and fascination and is also somewhat remininscent of street fighting years. No fillers, quality all the way through. Cannot praise this highly enough. Roll on the tour, I'll be the first there

5.0 out of 5 stars Ab Fab., 7 Nov 2005
Absolutely Fabulous ! One of the best SMinds ever !
Stay visible, reminds me of sons and fascination with a vibrating Bass guitar sounds.
Home, the 1st single is a great track, and Dolphins ends the album with one of the best ever atmospheric songs ever made, very emotionnal indeed. The rest is great between the late 80 's and early 90's albums, mixes between some oh jungleland, let there be love, see the lignt etc....A little bit like Peter Gabriel last album. It is worth every pennies you will spend.
Great come back from the Simple Minds, Jim kerr vocals are as usual wonderfull, Charlie Burchill guitars riffs are flamboying, Mell Gaynor holds an ever astonishing tempo et the bass guitar from Eddy Duffy are really excellent. The phoenix is reborn from its own ashes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, 16 Oct 2005
By Adamski (UK) - See all my reviews

This superb album takes up where Good News From The Next World left off. It's in a similar vein I feel, if a little darker. Pure, unadulterated adult pop/rock. I can't believe how poorly this release is being marketed, I couldn't find it in any record stores and it isn't even in the charts!!! If U2 had released this it would instantly sell millions and become once of their best albums. An easy 5 stars.
