Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Beginning with the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour, the epic story unfolds through 26 missions taken from real events of the U.S. Navy's campaign in the Pacific. Battles take place in hotspots such as Midway Island, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal.

Featuring 35 authentic military aircraft, plus more to unlock, prepare to pilot an incredible line-up of US and Japanese planes, including the F4F Hellcat and F6F Wildcat, the SBD Dauntless, the P-40 Warhawk and the F4U Corsair.

Players will also be able to switch between the pilot's and gunner's seats and experience first-hand what it's like when it's just you and your plane against a relentless enemy that just won't accept defeat.

Heroes of the Pacific features airborne battles with up to an awesome 150 planes in the sky at one time. This is the first time a flight combat game has featured skies so filled with aircraft, AA fire, smoke and pieces of blown-apart airplane. This is war, gentlemen, and it's going to feel like all hell has been let loose in the skies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastico!!, 26 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Hours of fun to be had with this game. HOP is arcade style and messing about with payloads and fuel is not part of the fun. A mission is presented to you which may involve attacking Guadacanal, recon on a shipping fleet in the pacific, protecting your own aircraft carriers or engaging in a huge dogfight etc (Or even all of the previous).

The game is well presented and visually pleasing. The missions are varied and can take some time to master. The flight controls are responsive (using a joystick)and each plane handles differently. One tip is that the rudder control only works at a certain speed. You'll soon master that. There are four classes of plane, fighters, dive bombers, torpedo bombers and the heavy duty bombers. Within the four classes there are many planes that can be used, unlocked or upgraded throughout the campaign modes.

The storyline and cut scenes of actual footage of the battle in the Pacific are good.On the down side the game does get a bit pro USA ish. i.e "no one messes with the US and gets away with it" (They're simple people it keeps 'em happy). And you can only stay within a certain area and altitude before you get a "Crowe get back to the combat zone" warning.

All in all this is an extremely enjoyable game. If you're looking for waypoints and patrolling certain grid locations with limited ammunition and calculating fuel percentatages etc then this is not the game for you. If you're looking for an instant dogfight and bombing run on ships and land targets then this game is the one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable game, 3 Jan 2006
By John F Blakesmith (Sherborne, Dorset United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I normally play strategy games as they are slow enough for my mature years. I had read reviews of this game and thought I would try at least one 'shoot em up' game. Once I got the hang of getting airborne ( not too dificult ) I slowly progressed through the missions. I died many times as my reactions are not so quick but I found the graphics and the overall ease of flying kept my interest. I found dive bombing the most enjoyable as placing your plane into a steep dive and screaming down to bomb a ship to the bottom of the ocean is a great stress relieving experience. The missions are varied and are not easy to complete but perseverance pay dividends.Would not buy another shoot em up, but this game is well worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice graphics, 5 Nov 2005
This has some of the best 3D graphics i've seen and a high spec PC is a requirement for this. This game is very much an arcade style type of simulator in that you are guided through missions and told what to hit as you are flying making it all very easy to know what you are doing without ever reading any manual of any kind. The only realistic feature is that you can stall if you go to slow. Other than that though you are normally faced against overwhelming hordes of enemy planes which you sometimes have to ignore just to bomb a ground target in time to save some general. The action is non stop and relentless and it is difficult even at rookie level to shoot down planes sometimes because the planes take many shots to shoot down depending on their armour level. Previous flight sim dogfight experience would be handy here but you do get unlimited ammo so you do get them eventually. As you complete missions you get awarded points and new more advanced planes are 'unlocked' in the same way cars are unlocked in rally sims. With your upgrade points you can upgrade your plane to a better version which has better guns for example. You start off in the rubbish P40 Warhawk but get better planes such as the Dautless, Corsair and Hellcat as you progress. The inbetween mission video clips and summaries of what actually happened during the Pacific war are brilliant and explain why this is on a DVD-ROM. Another great feature is that if you are in a plane with a rear gunner - the gunner does all the work automatically firing at other planes and ships as you fly the thing. You also fly with wingmen in the game which you command using only 4 general commands (such as defend this area)- luckily the wingmen usually do a good job. The only downer is even at the easy level (1/5 rookie) the tasks seem a bit too hard.
