Let me open by saying that if you didn't like the film Innocence, there isn't really much that you can get out of this CD. But for fans, this is as essential a purchase as the DVD itself.
All of the songs from the film are present, from the memorable themes The Ballade of Puppest and Follow Me, to extended versions of all the background tunes from throughout the film. So in that respect, this is a fairly typical film OST. But the quality of those songs, and their relevance to the film, are what really make it stand out.
Most of the music was composed by Kenji Kawai, and for many that is reason enough to buy this right away, but for those who don't know, his works are renowned for their beautiful melodies and subtle messages, and they complement Oshii's film perfectly. If you have seen the film, you will found that the songs all serve to evoke the same emotions that the film did, although this may merely be through a subconscious association.
Music is one of those products that is very hard to review, due to it being more to do with personal taste than any other entertainment media. It is hard to deduct the technical implementation of music, but all of the tracks here are performed flawlessly, with Kimiko Itoh's vocal performance in some pieces being a real high point.
Overall, fans of the film will lap this up, but if you aren't familiar with it, or didn't like it, then it is hard to recommend this purely as music in its own right, but I doubt that you would have come across this review if you weren't deliberately searching for it.

As an aside, the film Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, is actually very good, and so if you have arrived at this page by random and don't know what this is going on about, it would be well worth checking out, particularly if you are a fan of anime, or if you appreciate stunning visuals and a thought-provoking plot more than straightforward shooting and swearing from start to finish.
