4.0 out of 5 stars Stay out of the Shallows, they have hidden depths, 21 Dec 2004
By russell clarke "stipesdoppleganger" (halifax, west yorks) - See all my reviews

This review is from: More Deep Cuts (Audio CD)
It's a strange one is More Deep Cuts. It recalls the intimate vocal stylings of Slint, the perverse melodic edge of Sparklehorse and, the acerbic edginess of King of the Slums all buffed up to a contemporary sheen with galloping bass lines and bold production. Often this all occurs within one song.
"Freshman Thesis" opens with sawing strains of violin before a lolloping bass line kicks in and the song intercuts between these two till the end when it reaches levels of GSYBE intensity. "Ave Grave" pit's a tale of mass burial to a wonky slightly twee tune with spectral vocal backing and twinkling chimes. "Cloisterphobia" is well named. Its clammy atmosphere augmented with ominous clanging chords of guitar and howls of singing saw till it toils to another authoritative instrumental break. Effervescent peals of glockenspiel usher in "2 AM" before a storm of pebble dashed guitar and banshee vocals explain why "its 2 AM /and I'm trying to sleep". Vocalist Chavo Fraser's half spoken in your ear approach to "Walk of Shame" is uncannily like Slint circa "Spiderland" but has more violins and a bumbling trip along arrangement very much unlike Slint. "House Break" has a delicate fragility but imbibes moments of peripheral beauty.
There are four mini instrumentals which adopt a slightly out of kilter approach to the main songs but are fine as companion pieces and often segue into them so they almost become part of the song itself. The curiously titled "Int" is a smoky arcane number with wobbly instrumentation that leaves you wondering how they made it and was it by accident. The one song that doesn't quite work is "Ask me about John Stross" which although it has resolute chimes like something off The Cocteau Twins "Treasure" is dragged down by a scratchy guitar and a lacklustre arrangement.
So strange it may be in its myriad influences, or the ones I perceive anyway, but it's often a palingenetic thing of real beauty and insidious in the way it creeps into your affections. Thee More Shallows definitely have hidden depths.

4.0 out of 5 stars un-easy listening, 7 Jul 2006
This review is from: More Deep Cuts (Audio CD)
In essence this album is best described as lo-fi indie, although, as is often the case, lo-fi is a bit of a misnomer here, the tracks are all well recorded but with a definite live feel to them. There is however a musical adventurousness lacking in a lot of their peers. The ghostly musical saws on Instrumental Number 1 and the tinkling arpeggio played on wine glasses on 2am give this album a very eerie feel while claustrophobic almost whispered vocals only add to this.

Lyrically the Shallows explore some very unusual territory. For example "Ave Grave" takes an almost childlike look at genocide written from the point of view of the perpetrators. "Freshman Thesis" questions the motivation of song writers ("Before I spoke in riddles, I was worried someone would hear me, Now I know that no one really listens so I will just speak clearly"). Again the lyrics add to the to the eerie claustrophobic feel of the album.

All though this is not an album that leaps from the speakers demanding you pay it attention, it is an arty, well written record full of melodic hooks and clever arrangements which on repeated listens is very rewarding. Un-easy listening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Songs for nighttime hours, 2 Dec 2004
This review is from: More Deep Cuts (Audio CD)
Although the second Thee More Shallows record released in the UK this is in fact their freshman effort, although you wouldn't guess that on listening. The sound is a little lighter than A History of Sport Fishing, with the arrangements even a little tighter than those on the follow up record.

Again the subject matter is firmly based in the night time world of basement rooms and twenty four hour diners, feeling like a walk-home from a particularly strange college party.

The album is split into four parts with instrumental interludes between each, which seems odd on first listen but adds to the atmosphere on repeated plays. Genre-wise they still sound like a Northern Californian Arab Strap.
