3.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic and flawed, 6 Sep 2008

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
American reviewers loathed this story because they interpreted Mortimer's loathing for Leslie Titmuss as a dislike for anyone trying "to make something of" themselves. However they probably knew little of the widespread contempt at the time for certain Tory politicians who had tried to climb the greasy pole. Titmuss is no single Tory -- Norman Tebbit, for example, never undertook noticeably successful voice-coaching exercises -- but he is a composite of several.

David Threlfall, who plays Titmuss, is brilliant here, gradually transforming himself from yokel to Tory aspirant to cabinet minister. The other brilliant acting here comes from Jill Bennett. Annette Crosbie is also good, but she has an unconvincing part to play. Jan Waters as Mrs Wickstead is gorgeous, if just a tad old for Fred. The remaining women's parts are one-dimensional, and the rest of the men's parts are either bumbling grandads (Hordern and Slartibartfast) playing themselves, or the largely stony-faced Simcox sons.

This production would certainly have not won any prizes for the make-up. The bulk of the story covers 30+ years, yet the two Simcox sons hardly change at all in appearance. Michael Hordern plays Simeon Simcox throughout, and the wig he has to play for the final youthful scene where he confesses all to Crosbie is truly laughable. Because the make-up is so awful, you occasionally get confused as to where each flashback is taking you to -- e.g. it takes a while to work out whether Charlotte Fanner dies before or after Simcox, and this confusion serves no dramatic purpose.

The extras are scant. There are no "what-happened-last-time" reminders at the start of each episode, so don't try watching one episode per week as it was originally broadcast, because you will forget some of the details. I got impatient and watched the whole thing in a week. There are real problems with the plot: if Simcox felt so guilty about Charlotte, why did he leave the shares to Titmuss once Charlotte had died if his intention was to give money to Nicky, Charlotte's son? He could have left the shares in trust for Nicky.

This is nostalgic viewing, but it's about an era now gone, and I'm not sure there are many lessons for today.
