Product Description

CD Description
Chris Wood is an uncompromising writer whose music reveals his love for the unofficial history of English-speaking people. With gentle intelligence he weaves the tradition with his own contemporary parables; his writing has been said to share the same timeless quality as Richard Thompson at his best. The Irish Times heralded Chris Wood as "the renaissance man of English folk" when on his own R.U.F Records label he released The Lark Descending in 2005. The album includes the BBC Folk Award-winning song "One In A Million".

The Lark Descending celebrates a few of the stories of the people who are governed, in rich and compelling fashion--the indigenous population of England has been unravelling the universe in music and song for millennia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem folk at it's best, 19 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This is one awesome album even if you are not a folky. Every track is a gem. "One in a million" also reduced me to tears, this in my opinion is one of the best love songs ever written. "Albion" is a true story about Chris Wood finding a man hanging from a tree when out with his son in a park. A real harrowing and isolating track, expressing emotions very deeply that most of us will never experience, very haunting. I really like the first track "Hard" written about his daughter. If you have a youngen your self like me, will put a real smile on your face. "Lord Bateman" a beautiful song of love lost and found, and "John Barleycorn" about the brutal killing of a man is very dark, but again beautiful written and sung.

If you listen to this album and are not moved, I would be very surprised. This is one of the best folk albums I have ever heard. Not all folk is same, give it a shot, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, 25 Jul 2005
By Tristan Fitzgerald "Trisfitz" (London) - See all my reviews

I'm not a folk fan. I've discovered certain folk artists lately, after an aversion that was mainly a result of prejudice. Once you get into it, it's a compelling emotional, and sometimes haunting, musical landscape. For instance, a song on this album - 'One in a million' - made me cry. It was a moving story, conveyed in a beautiful song. The traditional songs on this album are also powerfully sung and played. I didn't feel the opening track was as strong as the rest of the album, but over all I recommend it highly!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag, 18 Jul 2006
By James Aitken "Chilon" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This album is a mixed bag. It has some very good aspects. I agree with the previous reviewers who mention "One in a Million" as being a fantastically original and poignant song (although you would have to be an emotional wreck for it to make you cry!). Even more interesting, to me, from a musical and lyrical point of view is the performance of the song "Lord Bateman". This traditional song, with a modern arrangment by Wood, tells the story of an English noble who travels to Turkey, is imprisoned, released by the Caliph's daughter with whom he falls in love and who follows him back to England. Girl power was alive and well in the 16th century it seems! Wood's voice and musicianship are at their best on this song.

However, much of the rest of the album is, quite simply, a bit depressing. Why is it necessary for English folk music to be so unremittingly melancholy and so "worthier than thou"? And is it really necessary still to be writing songs that are allegories of "Thatcher's Britain" in 2005 ("Albion")? The rest of us have all moved on: where are the songs about the issues of the day? In this sense the album has a very dated "80s" kind of feel (and that includes "One in a million" which is otherwise a good song - just 10/15 years too late). "Bleary Winter" (even its name gives you a clue) is a modern song written, it is said, to fill the gap concerning a lack of songs connected with the English enclosures - which, as well as being depressing seems very false for an album in 2005.

Am I glad I have this album in my CD collection? Yes, but only just. "One in a million", "Hard" and "Lord Bateman" redeem this album and, on balance, it is worth having for those songs alone - the rest of it though, I'm afraid, is dated and dull and even a committed fan of English folk music (which I am not) would have a tough time enjoying it.
