A cheerful but rather weak offering., 22 Jun 2005
To be fair to it, this poppy offering from Charlotte Church doesn't start off too badly. The intro has an upbeat clapped rhythm, overlaid with jaunty trumpets and electric keyboard, making it unusual and attention-grabbing. Also, Charlotte's voice is really quite lovely: it's deep, rich and melodic, though she does seem to be trying a little too hard for the 'soulful' sound. The lyrics are a terrible let down. The first lines: "I think I'm gonna need some therapy, oh babe I hope you got a PhD..." set the scene for an increasingly cringe-worthy track. Undoubtably love can make a person act crazily, but "you make me act like a whacked-out chick" is not exactly up there amongst the lyrical greats. I couldn't escape the feeling that this song is very similar to others from teenage singers several years Charlotte's junior - it would seem she should have outgrown this kind of music. I am perhaps being a little cynical. In essence this is a lively sing-along-able pop song, with a rather ridiculous premise and laughable lyrics nonetheless. Charlotte could have done so much more with such a beautiful voice. All in all, this track is instantly forgettable, it's bland, shallow and a bit amateurish. We'll probably all know the words after the overexposure it's sure to get on the radio...but c'mon Charlotte, show a little more of you, your mind and your age in future?
