Anna Maria was one of the most celebrated of soloists at the Pietà in Venice - on the violin, viola d'amore, cello, lute, mandolin, theorbo and harpsichord, no less! The six concerti written for her and recorded here are played by a violinist who, for my money, is in the very top rank of soloists, alongside the likes of Carmignola and Rachel Podger. Surprisingly, the six are not well known (although some of the musical material may be familiar to those who know the sonatas and ripieno concerti). They deserve much wider circulation.

CPO's excellent recording is very much up to the highest standards in terms of its historically informed credentials. Federico Guglielmo plays with admirable subtlety using minimal vibrato, thus allowing us to appreciate how these works may well have sounded to their original audience. He is ably supported by an excellent ensemble (L'Arte dell'Arco) equipped with a full range of instruments. Plucked strings make an especially telling contribution throughout. The recording is detailed and spacious. (Just how good it is, even an in-car system or p.c. + headphone combination should reveal. Through any decent hi-fi system, it should sound exceptional.)

The Concerto in b that opens the programme is probably the most powerful of the set but is by no means the sole attraction. The Concerto in D is another very strong composition, arguably marred by a rather laboured first section of the concluding Allegro, however. These works show Vivaldi in inspired form, played and recorded with relish and assurance.
