The Danish born Emil Hartmann was the son of a famous composer father, J P E Hartmann, and his music, sadly, has always been overshadowed by that of Hartmann senior. The concertos for violin (1876), cello (1879)and piano (1890)on this disc typify Emil's music: lyrical and romantic with Scandinavian overtones. All three works are in a somewhat similar vein with gentle lyricism predominating. The simple canzonetta slow movement of the piano concerto is both unusual and very beautiful. The music is lovely and the performances are very good, especially Per Salo in the piano concerto, but Da Capo's recording is disappointing. It is hybrid SACD but super audio is just what it is not. The orchestra sounds fine but in each work the soloist is very recessed, less so in the piano concerto, but most noticeably in the violin concerto where you have to strain to hear the soloist at times. What a great pity that in this rare repertoire the recording quality should have fallen short.Hence only four stars rating. However don't by put off. If you like late 19th century Scandinavian romanticism you will enjoy this disc.
