Excellent new release, 2 Feb 2006
A new album from KS (2005) with very nice digipak packaging, including a good booklet with ‘photos and text – would the contents live up to the packaging ? There is a feeling of looking back over past glories as much of this album reminds me of his late 70’s – early 80’s output with lots of sequencer rhythms and percussion. This period is my favourite in his career, so allow for this when reading my review. ‘Playmate In Paradise’ has a gentle introduction that quickly gives way to a pacey sequencer beat. This develops for around 13 minutes before giving way to a slow interlude that sounds quite severe after the smooth rhythm leading up to it. After a few minutes a new beat comes through and builds to another peak. Whilst this track reminds me of earlier times, there are many new sounds (including what I would describe as ‘ethnic voices’ which work very well). This is an excellent piece of music and probably enters my top 10 KS tracks. ‘Artemis In Jubileo’ is another studio track with a heavy percussion and rhythm foundation on which KS builds several melodic layers, mainly with a ‘strings’ sound reminiscent of ‘X’. ‘Same Thoughts Lion’ – the first of two live tracks recorded in Poland in 2003 makes use of the Alexis Andromeda, which has quite a distinctive sound. There’s lots of percussion to carry the track along at a nice pace. ‘Mephisto’ – the second live track opens up with a stereo sweeping pulse that gives a feeling of the opening of ‘Crystal Lake‘ on ‘Mirage’ but quickly builds with additional sequences and a bass underline. There’s a lot going on in this track as it develops over 15 minutes and it is, to my mind, KS at the top of his game – another contender for a top 10 KS track. To summarise, there are echoes of ‘Body Love’, ‘Mirage’ and ‘X’ here with many new elements to make a very enjoyable album. Knowing that KS had promised a rhythm heavy CD again still didn’t prepare me for the contents of this release. Highly recommended if you like any of these previous albums.
