Synopsis

Lochdubh: a frontier town in the wild west of Scotland. One hotel, one general store, one doctor and one lawman - PC Hamish Macbeth (Robery Carlyle). He's the sherrif, with his own singulat methods of dealing with crime and misdemeanors. When a notorious bully disappears, and three-hundredweight of salt goes missing from the local shop, Hamish (and his canine side-kick, Wee Jock) sniff out the unsavoury connection.

But when an incomer forces her notions of "Scottishness" on the unwilling locals, even he is surprised to discover the culprit behind a series of poison pen letters and an attempted murder. If only his love life were as easy to solve; but that's another story... Many a baffling mystery and outrageous scam lurk behind the closed doors of Lochdubh; and Hamish needs all his skill to keep the big boys from Inverness off his patch. Includes all the episodes from Series One of Hamish Macbeth except "West Coast Story".

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series - but one missing episode, 16 Sep 2005
By Rebecca Taylor "Bex" (West Sussex, England) - See all my reviews

I ordered this dvd as soon as it came out, because Hamish Macbeth was such a brilliant series. However, just one quibble: on my dvd version, which seems to be the same as the one pictured and was released in September, there are only five episodes. In tiny print on the back it states 'Regrettably episode four West Coast Story is not available on dvd'. Why this episode is missing is a bit of a mystery, so maybe somebody can enlighten us?

Having said that, the series is still worth buying. The characters are beautifully drawn, the stories quirky and lots of fun. I had forgotten just how gorgeous Robert Carlyle is as well! There really is something for everyone here, and it is one of the few programmes my husband and I are equally happy to watch. Looking forward to series two coming out - hopefully with all the episodes intact.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Carlise, 26 Dec 2005
By David Temple (BELFAST, Northern Ireland United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent series. The story lines are very good and frequently have a good twist at the end. The Scottish landescape is a beautiful backdrop to this series. The casting director has chosen well. Here is a series which combines pathos and comedy well. Not always an easy combination - tears in your eyes and laughter behind your smile.

I look forward to the release of series 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wee Jock's now content, 8 Aug 2005

Most times I've logged onto amazon I've checked for this DVD in the forlorn hope that the powers that be had finally listened to the pleas of a nation. Finally Success! Here in all their digital glory are the 6 episodes that make up the 1st series of Hamish Macbeth. Based on a series of books written by M. C. Beaton, this BBC drama follows local PC Hamish Macbeth as he strives to control the behavior of a small eccentric Scottish village. Although acutely good at his job, Hamish tries to keep as low a profile as possible so as to avoid promotion and the inevitable move away from his beloved Lochdubh.
Here's a list of the 6 episodes:

1) The great Lochdubh salt robbery
2) A pillar of the community
3) The big freeze
4) Wee Jock's lament
5) A bit of an epic

The gentle comedy of the series, entwined equally with layers of pathos, intrigue and above all a sense of community is played out brilliantly by all the actors, notably Robert Carlyle as the eponymous hero and Shirley Henderson as the quiet but delicious Isobel.

Hamish Macbeth continued for another 2 series before finally bowing out on a high. It spawned countless imitators due to its Sunday night success, leading to some truly dreadful 'Scottish' dramas that would have left Wee Jock shaking his furry head in dismay. If you want to see what good BBC drama is really like, buy this now.
