3.0 out of 5 stars Well written debut, but something missing, 1 Oct 2007
By A. Edge (Halifax, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Run the Risk (Paperback)
The writer gave good descriptions of LA (particularly the natural environment), and created a convincing relationship between Lieutenant Delillo and her daughter. It's just that the story didn't really grip me like I thought it should.

The story revolved around Delillo (and others) trying to catch a terrorist named "Gabriel", but then "Gabriel" ended up taking something of Delillo's instead.

The subsequent twist involving "Gabriel" I could see coming from a mile off, which spoiled things slightly....

Not a bad book, but not brilliant either. I may take a look at Frost's next book "Never Fear".

3.0 out of 5 stars 'Okay' thriller, 2 Nov 2009
By N. Brett (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Run the Risk (Paperback)
The author's first book is reasonably standard serial killer fare. Female lieutenant Delillo is having some problems with her daughter which deepen when she discovers that there is a link between her daughter, some recent murders and a serial killer that has plans for both daughter and mother....
So we have a traditional race against time, as the cops investigate the links between a number of murders until the race becomes very personal...
I think for these things to work you need engaging characters, clever plotting, the odd twist or two and a dash of style. This is okay but doesn't quite tick any of those boxes well enough, although overall the book is acceptable without having that missing wow factor. This may bode well for the next books in the series as the author develops confidence and becomes mor familiar with his characters.

So, in summary, 'okay' but don't rush out for this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Run Away!!, 25 April 2009
This review is from: Run the Risk (Paperback)
In contrast to the critical plaudits that litter the flyleaf from the likes of The Observer and The Independent On Sunday, I thought this book was dire. It has one of the most turgid and frustrating openings I've read in a good long while.

The opening chapter features a ridiculous scenario at a Beauty Pagent where we are introduced to the lead female detective and her sulky, petulant, teenage daughter --like we are supposed to give a damn? I didn't. They are a pair of cartoons.

The chapters immediately following weave this dreary and utterly uninteresting relationship into the main crime scene investigation to the point where I couldn't stand it any longer and threw the book aside.

Scarpetta has her dreary niece, Lucy. Delaware has his irritating girlfriend, Robyn. On and on! Why? I'm not interested in the dysfunctional personal relationships of the leads. I'm interested in the crime.

Popular crime fiction by numbers is what this book is. Unfortunately, the numbers don't add up.
