Synopsis
Two features. 'Azumi' is a young Japanese orphan who is a ruthless trained assassin. It is 19th Century Japan, torn-apart by war. Along with nine others she has been taught deadly martial arts skills by Master Gessai, in the hope that one day they will cold-bloodedly kill the warlords who cause constant unrest in the land. The ten proteges must form pairs and fight to the death to leave the five most merciless killers, cold enough to murder their own friends. But are Gessai's motives all that they seem. Also includes 'Azumi 2'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Films., 2 Oct 2007
By M. Wilson (Newcastle) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A lot of Asian movies can often lose something in the translation because of cultural references that western viewers may not get and a difference in taste as far as story and pacing. Azumi on the other hand is easy to watch and to follow. It's great fun and has plenty of action and has the feel of a Samurai comic book brought to life.

While certainly "bloody" I wouldn't call Azumi "gory", the blood is just part of the action in the same way as a gunshot is bloody in an American film.

Watch it, you won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliantly made Blood bath, 23 Mar 2007
One word WOW. If you like lots of blood and gory this is the perfect film for you. Occasional the acting could of done with a bit of work but that was only in the smaller character parts. Its like 'Battle Royale' in the 19th century so if you liked that then you will love this. All in all a brilliant film and I would recomend it to all those who enjoy these kinds of Japanese films.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little bit sad, a little bit funny and every bit action packed., 23 April 2009
Azumi is a young girl raised to be an assassin. There really isn't much more to it. It's a little bit sad, a little bit funny, and every bit action packed. The story in both films is straight forward and easy to follow. The acting and direction are both brilliant. Aya Ueto as Azumi is wonderful to watch. The feudal Japan settings are convincing and beautiful. Just about everything is perfect. In fact everything is perfect. It's a little bloody but by no means really gory and the swordplay is fantastic. So if you're a fan of Asian cinema, Japanese Manga or just a big fan of Action/Swordplay films in general then this film comes highly reccomended.
