Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Preview

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones has a lot to live up to, in order to satisfy fans of both The Sands of Time and Warrior Within. Although the latter was more commercially successful many have argued that The Sands of Time was the better game, with more involving puzzles and a more engaging main character.

This second sequel aims to combine elements of both with the Prince returning to the besieged city of Babylon. In escaping from capture he inadvertently gives life to the Dark Prince – an evil alter ego with quite different powers.

As the game progress you can switch between the two characters by stepping into fire, with each using their different weapons in even more gruesome ways than before. The Dark Prince’s Daggertail is particularly deadly, being a sort of long spiky chain with a blade on the end that works rather like the whips from Castlevania.

As the latest in a long line of games to take inspiration from Grand Theft Auto the whole game is set within the city of Babylon, which is yours to explore as you wish. Although there are no vehicles to carjack you can take part in some particularly brutal chariot races, if you get tired of walking and jumping around.

Whether this ends up being the best Prince of Persia yet rather depends on how much you like The Sands of Time, but it certainly is the most attractive with some superb graphics and enough new features to make Warrior Within seem even more lacking than ever. -- Harrison Dent

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

Manufacturer's Description

The Prince of Persia makes his way home to Babylon, bearing with him Kaileena, the enigmatic Empress of Time, and unspeakable scars from the Island of Time. But instead of the peace he longs for, he finds his kingdom ravaged by war and Kaileena the target of a brutal plot.

Cast to the streets, hunted as a fugitive, the Prince soon discovers that the Sands have tainted him, too. They have given rise to a deadly Dark Prince, whose spirit gradually possesses him&.

  • Alternate between the two personalities: Wield the powers and weapons of two master warriors with different combat styles, attitudes, and histories.
  • Choose your way to kill: Master the expanded Free-Form Fighting system to destroy enemies in your own style; strangle enemies from afar with the deadly chain; or surprise them with full speed kill moves. The choice is yours.
  • Battle freely in an urban environment: Dominate enemies on the perilous rooftops, elude assassins in chaotic streets and ambush pursuers.
  • Immerse yourself in a dramatic story: Experience unparalleled depth in storytelling as you fight your way through a twisting tale filled with adrenaline, tension and discovery.
  • Manipulate time to surprise enemies: Execute powerful attacks against entire armies by slowing down or rewinding time, or surprise them by using some all-new Sands of Time powers.
  • Experience a masterful blend of gameplay: True to the Prince of Persia franchise, the game provides a variety of action combat, agility and story-driven puzzles all masterfully blended together into a rich gaming experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!, 5 Sep 2006
    Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game hoping for many hours of excellent game play, however, I had problems from the start and consequently did not play the game at all. I had all the specifications required to play the game, however, the cutscenes were incessantly choppy and thus incomprehensible (If you're like me, I like to know the storyline when I play a game). After contacting Ubisoft technical centre, we tried to remedy the problem but to no avail. I even tried swapping the game for another incase the DVD was faulty, but it was the same.

I then decided to do my own research and discovered that Ubisoft uses a software copy protection tool on the game called STARFORCE. STARFORCE installs as a hidden device driver, without the end-user's knowledge or consent and is often linked to system instability and computer crashes. Moreover, the Starforce drivers, installed on your system, grant ring 0 (system level) privileges to any code under the ring 3 (user level) privileges. Thus, any virus or trojan can get OS privileges and totally control your system.
I actually got infected by a Trojan Horse for the very first time after 5 years of owning my computer which has the latest Anti-Virus protection and firewalls.
Also, when you uninstall the game, the Starforce drivers STAY on your computer.

After conducting my research and having been afflicted by a nasty trojan horse, I decided to uninstall the game. There is an official Starforce removal tool which I used to remove StarForce from my computer.

I suggest you do your own research and then decide whether you wish to purchase this game. There are some informative websites out there that will explain to you in detail the implications of this protection tool.

Although I didn't play the game, I am giving it a low rating due to pure inconvenience experienced, money wasted and my rights as a consumer disregarded!

As a reassuring conclusion, Ubisoft has now decided that the anti-copy software used with any future Ubisoft games won't be Starforce.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, 19 Jan 2006
I would definitely recommend this game to people. I fell in love with Sands of Time (definitely play that one first), but missed out on Warrior Within. I can tell anyone who hasn't played the latter that you should before starting The Two Thrones, unless, like me, you're one of those people who has no problem in joining a story mid-plot.

I thought the graphics were rather good - Though, occasionally, I would have preferred to see more video cut scenes rather than the polygon characters, a bit like Final Fantasy.

As the others have said, the most annoying thing about this game is the camera angles. A timed wall run is impossible if the camera will not face the wall, and sometimes, no matter how many times you make the Prince face the wall, he just does a 180 and turns to face you. This is frightfully irritating. In some cases it irritated me even more because, as the Dark Prince, you are occasionally required to chain-whip a block so as to pull it out of the wall. However, this is an impossible task if your character refuses to face the wall - and then of course the Dark Prince dies, because his life meter depletes continuously unless you kill something! The only other annoying thing I can think of - and this applies to all PoP games - is the inability to save at any point. This is a feature which should be gone from any modern game, as it originates from a time when games took 1/2 hours to complete (like the original PoP in 1989!). Nowadays, some of us have to get dinner ready, go to work, etc. and haven't got time to play constantly until the next save point.

I don't want to concentrate on that too much though - the plot is typically gripping, graphics good, length of game play satisfying and I am very pleased with it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fatally flawed, 2 Jan 2006
By P. J. Chenery "CountShagula" (London) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Has all the potential of a great game, albeit on similar lines to Sands of Time and Warrior Within. Sadly the game is let down by an apalling control system, where forward can be up/down/left or right depending on the whim of the programmers. Really there is no excuse for not sorting this out, and if as a developer you cant be be bothered then at least include the facility to save at will. It is incredibly frustrating to fail a timed run because your character cant be controlled. A good example of this is the tendency to rotate through 360 rather than 180 degrees - honestly if I wanted him to end up the same way he was originally facing I would be pressing the direction keys now would I ??

A good game overall - but only buy if you are prepared to be frustrated - I have been a regular buyer of this franchise but wont be doing so any more until this basic element of gameplay is sorted out - Ubisoft !! If I want high blood pressure I'll go to work thank you very much !!

Of course this review relates to the PC version only.
