I'd been hearing of Buck 65 for some time now, mainly through his association with Anticon & Sixtoo and from some very enthusiastic reviews hailing him as a pioneer of some new Hip Hop hybrid. These reviews also made much of his influences - Tom Waits, Kerouac etc. All in all it led to a huge sense of expectation.
Most of which was dashed upon hearing this.
First of all, it is a good album. But it ain't great.
There are four or five songs on here which qualify as some of the best music I've heard over the past year - 'Le 65isme' & 'Drawing Curtains' are both awesome tracks - but far too frequently the album seems to sink back into this cod-cowboy rap/blues thing which I can't seem to warm to. 'Blood Of A Young Wolf' just about pulls this sound off with some lush guitar, but even then I find myself struggling with the vocals.
I will persevere with this album, and probably dip into more of his back catalogue, but I feel slightly disappointed following the praise that's been heaped upon him.

Buck 65, he keeps on pushing the those bounderies of hip hop, each time he releases something new. The stand out track has to be blood of a young wolf, the guitar just lets you drift to your own world beyond reach of others, each track has the albity to take you somewhere different, set a mood, and set a place, if this is the way forward then count me in (Genius) .....

If Buck is on a learning curve, then he just got to the top of a steep incline. This album is another notch up from greats like Square and Talkin', which i gave 5 stars to so i really need a sixth for this one. Buck's ability to tell stories is emphasized again on this one, some songs seeming autobiographical but who knows. There is some commentary too, particular lyrics such as "pretty, pretty; who needs talent?" strike a chord without being too 'in your face' righteous. Blood of a Young Wolf and Rough House Blues are both pearls on a great album watch out for those. Buy this record whether you like hip-hop or not, with influences such as Cash and Waits and Kerouac there must be something for everyone...
