Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
Mexico City has been overrun by terrorists and only the Ghost Recon team can restore order – through the use of extreme violence. You command not just your three team mates but a high-tech array of weapons, armoured vehicles and aircraft.

The lowdown:
Although it still plays very similarly to the last Ghost Recon game, this is easily the most impressive of the series so far. The graphics, particularly on the Xbox 360, are extraordinary with a whole city sprawling out in front of you at a previously unimaginable level of detail. Unlike some squad based shooters the controls are simple and intuitive, allowing you to take part in the action and order about soldiers and vehicles at the same time with the minimum of fuss. The questionable artificial intelligence of your allies is the only serious flaw, but the ability to explore the city and plan your attack from any angle usually overcomes this problem.

Most exciting moment:
Calling in a helicopter gunship as you and your men are pinned down by a dozen terrorists, snipers and tanks.

Since you ask:
The game is set in 2013 and all of the high-tech weaponry is based on equipment the U.S. expects to have in operation by then – even the Metal Gear Solid style flying recon drones.

The bottom line:
Incredible graphics and one of the best squad based shooters ever.
Harrison Dent

Manufacturer's Description

The face of war has changed. Enemy lines blur, and there is no longer a clear opponent. New enemies and new threats require a new type of warfare - a new type of soldier.

Enter the Ghosts.

In 2013, the U.S. Army will implement the Integrated Warfighter System (IWS), evolving what we know as the modern soldier. IWS combines advanced weapon systems, satellite communication devices and enhanced survivability into one fully integrated combat system. The IWS program has been developed to meet these new threats head on. Now, it can be tested on the battlefield.

Following an insurgence in the heart of Mexico City, the U.S. Army's most elite Special Forces team is deployed to the center of the conflict to regain control of the city. Greatly outnumbered but fully equipped with the IWS, this elite team is the first and last line of defense on the battlefield. They are the Quiet professionals. They are the Ghosts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear, 25 May 2006

Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
I`ve been a huge fan of the squad based tactical first person shooters for some time now and have been waiting for this title with enthusiasm. Now it has finally arrived I must admit to having some mixed feelings about the finished product.

Much of the hype has been about the graphics level and the ability to interact with the environment etc. Yup, the graphics are amazing. Probably the best i`ve seen of this type ever. I`ve played the game on both console and a top-notch PC and they are about the same on both. I`m pleased to see that they`ve addressed the idea of `soft` cover and that you can shoot away fence panels etc which makes for a more realistic game. Indeed, it`s very impressive to be able to shoot out car tyres and blow off wheels. What I don`t quite get is why this is important. Fine, spend time adding stuff like this but only after you`ve mastered the game essentials, which brings me on to the things I don`t like.

Even after the latest bug fix patch the AI and general behaviour of your squad members is often ridiculous. I would say that probably 50% of the time they don`t do what you want them to do. To me that really isn`t acceptable and spoils things big time. Sometimes you have to issue a command multiple times to get them to respond, and when they do it`s often by doing the wrong thing. You tell them to give you covering fire and when it doesn`t come you find that 2 out of 3 members are staring at a wall for some reason. You ask a guy to run around a corner and go position himself to see whats going on, and he walks backwards around the corner without looking before moving on! Yay as he gets hot many time in the back of the head. Didn`t they playtest this? I admit that when they do actually do what you ask it`s great and works very well but this is not the norm. The only thing I do wonder is that if it`s based on US forces AI it may be spot on 8-P.

They`ve taken away the facility where you could swap between squad members and control different guys which is a shame. Basically now you control the guy in charge and if he dies the mission ends. What I found I was doing was leading the team and then when I got injured moving myself out of harms way and instructing the rest of the squad to do most of the hard work from then on so I could complete the mission. Didn`t like this feature at all. It makes me feel that they`ve actually come away from the tactical squad based idea to a first person shooter with a bunch of hard to control `bots` following you around. I`m not saying that the AI of the old Ghost Recon was perfect but it was adequate most of the time.

It`s a shame that these days graphics are everything. Personally I prefer good gameplay and AI. I appreciate that this title is probably designed to attract the younger audience who just want `eye candy`. In the past my friends and I have all bought the Flashpoint/GR/Athena Sword type titles and played them all even today. I`ll be selling this one on soon as if I`m going to play this sort of game the older titles are better. Maybe down the line they`re bring out better mods to fix the problems but I doubt it.

If you know someone who owns it go have a play (there`s more in the PC version than the console) but I wouldn`t buy it if I were you. Go get the older titles which are on budget!

Looks great, plays rubbish.

Very disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not much fun , 28 May 2006
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
If you've played the previous Ghost Recon game/packs - forget it; this is nothing like it.

If you haven't played the previous Ghost Recon game/packs - then here you play Mitchell, commander of a futuristic crack four-man Ghost Recon team who are sent into various hot-spots to sort out the bad guys the good ole American way - with advanced recon-technology and big guns.

Sounds like fun? It should be - on starting up the graphics are great, the music (if a bit cheesy) creates atmosphere, the intro movie looks good, the deployment into the first (training) mission is slick. Then you're on the ground and into the game - and the frustration begins.

Once you have to do something other than walk fwds/bkwds/left/right - you realise how inadequate the manual is in explaining all the features at your disposal (probably) are. For example, the `Follow' command - nothing in the manual, nada. I can have a good guess at it, but what exactly does it do? And Drone? What? Where? Also there are no stats on the available weapons. Not living in a gun culture, I'd like to know something about the in-game guns to make a decision on which to equip for each mission - but maybe this isn't an issue for our cousins across the pond?

Next, the AI. Your team mates are sometimes incredibly dumb and will happily walk into a hail of bullets no matter have many time you tell them to `Move' or `Stop'. In fact, the commands you issue them seem `advisory' rather than `orders' as sometimes they just seem to have a mind of their own. The enemy AI however, is lethal; they seem to be able to pick you off from a country mile with one or two shots - and then its game over.

Yep, once your characters is dead you're back to loading from the next checkpoint - you cannot assume the role of one of your team to carry on. Which is one of the main frustrations - you find yourself playing the same scenarios over and over again. Now I've played a few games that have used checkpoints instead of save-games and it's been fine. But here, given the sparse occurrence of checkpoints verses the deadliness of the enemy - the game quickly becomes a repetitive chore.

Not the Ghost Recon I was hoping for - and not much fun at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loads of Good New Stuff but a lot of Lost Good Old Stuff, 19 May 2007

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
I was really looking forward to playing this game as I've completed the other Ghost Recon games and found them quite good. One thing I straight away noticed was some new functionality, including the command picklist etc, but I also noticed that I no longer could order my AI squad to be careful, to restrict movement, shooting etc.

As an ex-Para, although I'm aware that the game is set on US forces and they probably do behave in a mindless robotic fashion and shoot at anything that moves, British forces do not and a more subtle approach - not evident in this game but was in the last Ghost Recon series, is lost.

Still a good game [...]- well, welcome to the real world - if the game portrays a sense of realism (very limited in my view) and people sit up and realise the real thing is a minute by minute game of survival - we should probably send this one to the politicians and force them to play it.
