Amazon.co.uk Review
Its probably no coincidence that
Honeycomb was recorded just a few days before Frank Black joined his former bandmates in the Pixies for their reunion tour. In contrast to his work with the indie-rock icons,
Honeycomb is a low-key offering, laced with classic Americana thats as much as a result of the recording studios location (Nashville) as the pedigree of the guest musicians. For his backing band, Black collaborates with musicians who made their names with Stax Records and Muscle Shoals, including Steve Cropper, Buddy Miller and Spooner Oldham. To his credit, Black doesnt seem out of place amongst musicians of such stature, and
Honeycomb could well be his best solo album yet. "I Burn Today" is a lovely and desperate hymnal and "Go Find Your Saint" is a perfect piece of classic American radio rock, though his cover of "Dark End of the Street" lacks any real punch. Though its likely that Blacks best work is behind him, due to his days with the Pixies, he seems to be picking up steam again as a solo artist.
Honeycomb is a work of maturity and depth, and the sound of a musician not afraid to move on.
