Synopsis

The relationship between two brothers who followed separate yet equally successful roads to pop stardom forms the focus for 'Harry And Max'. Harry is practically an industry veteran at the ripe age of 23, but his teen-pop band is facing a tough time connecting with a maturing audience that is rapidly leaving the band behind. Sixteen-year-old Max is just getting a foothold in the business, but is already making vital inroads into the pre-teen pop scene. The relationship between the two has been distant for many years, so Harry suggests the brothers go on a camping trip to rekindle their relationship. What initially starts out as a friendly vacation, in which Harry hopes to dispense some sage words of wisdom about the music industry to his wide-eyed and innocent brother, soon plunges into something altogether darker. Max confesses his homosexuality, reveals his relationship with a 40-year-old male teacher, and perhaps most shockingly of all, openly admits his sexual desire for Harry. Things get worse as Harry tracks down the teacher, only to seduce him in a parking lot, sparking a series of betrayals between the brothers that neatly sets up an engrossing conclusion to the film. An engaging examination of an entirely dysfunctional relationship, the film opens up a fascinating discourse on topics such as incest, trust, homosexuality, and paedophilia. The gutsy performances from Bryce Johnson and Cole Williams deserve great applause, especially considering the formidable subject matter with which they were working. A consuming and deeply eloquent movie, 'Harry And Max' is an audacious, fearless piece of filmmaking.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strangely Erotic, 16 Mar 2006
By A Customer
I saw this film in the theater, and despite the negative reviews, I wound up enjoying it immensely. While this film is clearly not for everyone, exploring as it does the subject of gay incest. I would not even say that it was particularly well made, but it was certainly a cinematic journey that we have not been on before. The chemistry between the two leads was strong, and I think that overcame the overall amatuer feel of the production. If the test of a decent film is whether you'd sit through it twice, I would say this is a worthwile investment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Implausible and Dull, 12 Nov 2007
By Digger77 (London) - See all my reviews
Did I miss the point of this film? Is it an examination of incest, of coming out, of gay sex or merely of sibling rivalry? The film finished with a dozen unanswered questions and I found it very disappointing, despite the positive review it received.
Had the film managed to examine how/why an incestuous relationship had developed between these 2 brothers, then the film might have worked to some degree. As it is, little background is given to past events, and the 2 brothers change their minds regarding their feelings for one another almost on a scene-to-scene basis. The end result for me was that it was just another gay film, but without the obligatory sex scene or any sort of satisfactory ending. The 2 actors playing the brothers did their best, but they could not look more different physically. This, as well as the implausible storyline, made it extremely difficult to believe that they were related as claimed, which surely defeated the entire object of the film?
The film's content is controversial and you might anticipate it as being uncomfortable to watch. However be warned that it falls very short of any expectations you might have.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yikes, 2 Mar 2008
By J. BROOKS - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My, my, my. This is one bizarre movie. Strange acting, terrible dialogue, and a very uncomfortable and unbelievable theme. It is perhaps possible to approach the subject of incest with - dare i say - "sensitivity", but this is a colossal failure. Save yourself and avoid this film.
