Now here is an interesting one. I got a tip the other day whilst raving on about Hard-Fi and how great I think they are. They said, ow... you'll love The Dead 60s then. With that in mind, I jumped on to Amazon when I got to work and a few clicks later I had the album winging its way to me. The Dead 60s - never really heard of them, until now that is. I'll cut to the chase, yep a bit like Hard-Fi - I quite like it. I think there is where the problem lies. I was kind of expecting a mind blowing hour of music that would have me frothing at the mouth. Didn't quite happen. Guess it has been a strong year with The Bravery, aforementioned Hard-Fi, Kaiser Chiefs et all, that any ok albums just don't quite have the effect they would have had four or five years ago when uk rock music was not on such a high. The Dead 60s sound like The Clash did when they allowed the reggae ska roots shine through. You can see the Clash as bold as day in numerous songs on the album, and also there was a bit of Madness style ska flying about too. I found there was not the consistency in the track listing, it is the type of album I would probably skip through until I found my favourite tracks. A bit like the Duke Spirit album 'Cuts across the land'. Don't bother spending the extra money on the bonus disc, as it is filled with other tracks that wouldn't seem out of place being played from a stall on Camden Market. Incidental, instrumental ska music. So that is why I said it was an interesting album, not bad, interesting set of influences that has produce a good effort. Not quite up there with the best bands of this year, but probably worth monitoring in the future. *** Like: The Clash, Madness, Hard-Fi ***
