5.0 out of 5 stars Lucidity Personified, 18 Mar 2007
By N. E. M. Goulder (Saffron Walden, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Aimard turns 50 this year (2007) and surely must be comfortable that this disc ranks among his many outstanding achievements.
The Ravel is among the catalogue's more frequently recorded works, a masterpiece that I don't believe anyone doubts will continue to be played for centuries to come. It's hard to claim that any one artist delivers the "perfect" performance of a work like this, because like any truly great work it is usually possible to find something new in it each time you hear it really well done. But Aimard's touch and clarity is pretty much as good as I have ever heard anyone achieve in this piece. He doesn't overstate its claims, he is meticulously articulate. I love Gaspard in this clean state.
Turning to the much harder nut that is Carter's mid-period keyboard masterpiece, his Night Fantasies, Aimard is no less committed. Indeed the free extra CD that comes with this set (spoken by Aimard in English that is deeply french-inflected, and accompanid with his own selection of musical examples) devotes little over a minute to the Ravel before focussing in depth on the Carter. It's also close to impeccable as a performance. Aimard clearly hopes that Night Fantasies will be as well appreciated in a hundred years' time as the Ravel is today ... well, for all my huge enthusiasm for Carter's mightily impressive compositional catalogue, I have to be realist enough to accept that Carter is unlikely ever to reach quite the breadth of appeal that Ravel has. But Night Fantasies is undeniably a major achievement, a milestone in the evolution of piano writing in an environment that has had little (beyond say the Boulez 2nd and the Barraqué, and the works of such as Messaien and perhaps Tippett) that has truly taken the keyboard forwards since 1937, the year in which Gaspard de la Nuit was written.
Aimard also includes Carter's 1999 Two Diversions (minor pieces omitted from Charles Rosen's otherwise wonderful "complete" Carter piano music - although it migt have been complete at the time) and the short but very effective "90+", a charming homage to Goffredo Petrassi.
I am sure you'd enjoy the Ravel alone, so if you are half tempted to try the Carter, give this disc a go and you are unlikely to regret it. Who knows, you may find a whole new sound world opens out for you ... although again to be realistic there are other ways to "find" the core of Carter's language. But you have to start somewhere. Aimard undoubtedly makes a brilliant effort to bring this music to life, both in his performance and on the accompanying CD - you are not likely to find a much more lucid or persuasive advocate.
