Haydn arranged (perhaps harmonised might be another term) some 400 of the melodies George Thomson sent to him. Amazingly, he never had titles or words, just the tunes and (sometimes) a short description of the piece, so these are not linked to an interpretation of the words.

Thae poetry is a mixture: it is folksong, although some is a bit highfalutin - there are traditional dialect songs, romantic verse, and some pretty slight or sentimental numbers. If you don't like traditional Scots song, then these are not for you.

How Haydn did it, and turned out something that fits the song, baffles me.
His settings are very easy on the ear, and are given a splendid performance by Lorna Anderson & Jamie Macdougall. The Haydn Trio Eisenstadt provide an excellent, even, lively accompaniment.
Volume 1 was just 1 CD: this is Vol 2 and is 4 CDs, containing 91 songs (about 280 minutes!) with a booklet containing an useful essay and ALL the words.
The soloist's diction is in any case excellent.
Of course, it is all a bit concentrated - even 1 CD is a lot of Scots songs - and I suspect that if you listened to all 4 in one go you'd have a wee touch o' the dialect afterwards.
