Nine out of the fourteen tracks on here feature a guest vocalist, lending itself to being a very eclectic hip-hop album. But Ben "Hundred Strong" Dubuisson glues all the ideas together seamlessly by using the old chestnut that is good musicianship, drawing on a decade of experience as a recording artist. The album kicks off with the classic live soul sound of "All Ain't The Same" featuring Compost Records lady, Joseph Malik. Things grow a little darker on "Mostly Empty Solid Space", where a constant chromatic plucked bassline provides the foundation for Def Harmonic to rap over. But it's Joseph Malik's reintroduction to proceedings on "Once More" that really steals the show, complimenting a bluesy-electric guitar which itself doubles up the bass, here the boundaries between hip hop, funk, soul and rock are blurred perfectly. "Basement Blues" would be an ideal purchase for fans of The Herbaliser and an upbeat Portishead and Tricky.
