Product Description

Loyal veteran Navy S.E.A.L. Lt. A.K. Waters (Bruce Willis) is sent into the heart of war-torn Africa on a hazardous mission to rescue Dr. Lena Hendricks (Monica Bellucci), a U.S. citizen who runs a missionary. When the beautiful doctor refuses to abandon the refugees in her care, Lt. Waters finds himself having to choose between following orders and the dictates of his own conscience. Together, they begin a dangerous trek through the deadly jungle, all the while being pursued by a rebel militiagroup, with only one goal in mind: to assassinate Lt. Waters' unit and the refugees in his care.

From Amazon.co.uk

While it offers nothing new to the military action genre, Tears of the Sun distinguishes itself with fine acting, expert craftsmanship, and seriousness of purpose. Its familiar "extraction mission" plot is essentially similar to that of Black Hawk Down, involving a crack team of U.S. Special Ops commandos struggling to rescue innocent missionaries amidst the bloody horror of Nigerian ethnic cleansing. With Bruce Willis as their grizzled, no-nonsense commander, the skillful team enters a hot zone that gets even hotter when their "package"--an American national (Monica Bellucci) who runs the isolated mission--demands that 70 Nigerian villagers be included in the rescue. Willis's uneasy conscience leads him to defy orders and expand his mission, and in an ambitious follow up to Training Day, director Antoine Fuqua escalates tension and strike-force with considerable emotional impact. Originally considered as a potential entry in Willis's Die Hard series, and released on the eve of America's war with Iraq, Tears of the Sun admirably avoids jingoism with its rousing story of personal good vs. political evil. --Jeff Shannon --This text refers to an alternate DVD edition.

Best film i've seen in a long time. Didn't think it was going to be all that but thought I'd watch it anyway and was completely blown away. Watched it with my 14 year old son, even he said it was amazing. Good, fast delivery from supplier too. Excellent purchase, very impressed.

Bruce Willis is one of those actors from whom you expect great things without there being any particular logic behind the inclination, after all, he makes some decidedly average films. I had heard that Tears of the Sun was a less than excellent exposition of the action man's talents and so I started to watch this film ready fortified for the expected ensuing disappointment.
As it turned out, I shouldn't have bothered, because as the film progressed, I became increasingly optimistic. Quite apart from the fact that the story was well crafted, I was completely unprepared for the stunning cinematrography, the beautiful cut-away shots of jungle flora and fauna and the excellent soundtrack. In many ways, this is a movie that didn't require Bruce Willis, and perhaps it's the big name lead that caused all the fuss and disappointment, since it's no star vehicle, but even so, Willis doesn't in any way disappoint. The tale is gripping and tense, there's plenty of action and the subject matter is compelling if at times, upsetting.
So, I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, although I'm still not sure if my overall impression would be much changed by having greater hopes for it before it began, I guess a second viewing is in order to make sure, but I cannot in any way see how anyone would find this movie dull or hateful.

Already had the DVD of this film and thoroughly enjoyed it, as have most fellow reviewers here, and happily give this action-packed but still poignant drama five stars.

No, this review concerns the Blu-ray edition I purloined a few days ago. Audio is a bit better, whilst stubble and beads of sweat are very clearly depicted, showing the efficacy of high-definition ... but WHY have several scenes been DELETED? Such as the closing scene of Arthur, now acknowledged as legal successor, addressing his fellow refugees at the Camerounian border; as Bruce & Co. take off in the helicopter, only Arthur’s fist and “Freedom!” are shown. These missing scenes are available in the Special Features, Deleted Scenes option ... but one is missing entirely: the scene where the victorious rebel leaders discuss which political bloc to turn to, The West, Russia or China. The other language option is Dutch, so am wondering if this is a ‘peculiarity of import.’

Am keeping my DVD; it is the whole film.

Nigeria' is in turmoil ravaged by rebel militia, the President has been overthrown, foreign nationals are being evacuated.
'Navy-Seal' Lieutenant A.K Walters' and his elite squad are ordered into a remote jungle region to rescue Dr Lena Flore
Kendricks' (Monica Bellucci) a Priest and two Nuns before the rebels overrun the mission-hospital.
However, 'Dr Kendricks' refuses to leave without her charges, seventy in all, reluctantly and against orders the Lieutenant
agrees to take all those that can walk out, knowing there will not be enough room in the designated Helicopters they are
to link up with at a pre-determined location to carry them all to safety, the Priest and the Nuns had stayed behind with those
that could not leave with the main party.
There are large numbers of rebels in the area there will be much in the way of threat along the way, when reaching the pre-
determined pick-up point the Lieutenant, his Squad and the Doctor board the two helicopters sent leaving most of her
charges behind, however shortly into the flight realizing that leaving so many behind was in effect a death sentence, the
Lieutenant, the Doctor and many of his Squad turn back, now, those they couldn't load on-board the Copter have to try and
walk to safety.
What 'Lt Walter's' hasn't been made aware of initially is that among the group they are trying to rescue is the deposed Presidents
Son, this fact will keep the pursuing rebel forces close-by.
With the certainty of combat to occur on the journey not all will survive.
This one is often underrated by many, myself i find it both tense and compelling viewing with it's many often brutal action-sequences.

This is a truly underrated and poorly advertised masterpiece. Exposing the true horrors of war, exposes a unfamiliar side of Bruce Willis, a caring loving side.
Although at times deeply disturbing and horrific, some of the scenes are incredibly moving.
The balance obtained in this film is superb, between action drama and tagedy..
A superb piece of work...

When i bought this film i didn't know what to expect. Was it going to be another Rambo, single man army takes on a whole entire country's forces or was it going to be more like Mel Gibson's We Were Soldiers, a group of guys fighting for what they believe is right, as true to life as is possible in Hollywood.

What you get infact is something directly in the middle. Very similar in storyline to the latest Rambo film but far more believable than the one man army. You can buy into the characters, you can understand why they are there and why they make the choices they make. Bruce Willis is far less wooden than Stallone which adds to the film as a whole.

I'd say to anybody who likes action films that they should give this a look. Maybe not for the war movie purists
