Product Description

Product Description

Bill Murray stars in this war comedy directed by Ivan Reitman. John Winger (Murray) is going through an extremely difficult time; he loses everything that matters to him - his car, apartment and girlfriend - on the same day. Along with his equally unsuccessful best friend, Russell Zitsky (Harold Ramis), John decides to enrol in the US Army, but discovers that his unit is little more than a refuge for drug-addled psychotic misfits. Matters are not helped by the no-nonsense Sergeant Hulka (Warren Oates), who is determined to instil some discipline in his unruly recruits.

From Amazon.co.uk

Bill Murray was heading toward a career peak on the back of comedies such as this one from 1981, the second film in his ongoing collaboration with director Ivan Reitman (the two went on to make Ghostbusters). Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. --Tom Keogh

I'd been meaning to check this one out for a while after a recommendation from a friend in the states. I eventually saw it on TV last night and have spent today trying to get hold of it, hence the reason for being on this website....Well what can I say, its got Bill Murray (at the peak of his comedy powers) as a loser who realises his everyday life sucks and decides to enrole in with the army, with his buddy Ramis. The film also features John Candy, who's gotta be one of the best comedy actors of that generation as another recruit...anyway I could go on. I recommend anyone to see it, there will be people who take themselves too seriously who think this film is a bit childish etc, but those people aside for everyone else.....WATCH IT!

When John Winger (played by Bill Murray) finds his life sliding away from him, a television commercial shows him an organization that can help him turn his life around, the United States Army! Dragging his friend Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis), he joins up, and runs into a stone wall in the shape of Drill-Sergeant Hulka (Warren Oates). Together with the other misfits in his outfit (John Candy, Judge Reinhold, John Diehl, and others), Winger games the system and turns the US Army every which way but loose! [Color, released in 1981, with a running time of 1 hour, 41 minutes.]
This is a very funny movie! Unfortunately, it is rated R, and is NOT for younger viewers. The violence is pretty tame, and there are a few swear words used, but the main problem is that there are several nude scenes. So, if you buy this, you will need to watch it when the kids aren't around, just like me. But, it is a hilarious movie, and one that you will enjoy watching over and over again.

"Why did the chicken cross the road, to get to the other side" My favourite part of this film. This made me almost join the Army.

Real score: 3 stars
Adjusted for Amazon reviewers getting it wrong: 3 stars (not necessary! Just because Bill Murray is in a film doesn't make it great but I cansee why people like it)

Everytime I started really enjoying this film for what it was it had to go and spoil it a bit by going slightly too far. It's really quite a funny Animal House-esque comedy, which isn't going to win any awards for subtlety or intelligence, but you get what you expect. Bill Murray is as brilliant as always, and is funny when he's standing still saying nothing. All the usual 80s comedic actors turn up and are great in turn (John Candy, Judge Reinhold, etc.) and it's generally good fun.

However, it just over steps the mark far too often for me. The blatantly propagandistic speech by Murray, about Americans being mutts, which screams post-Vietnam consolation and "the American army may be wacky and daft but it's still the best in the world!" style nonsense. The completely unnecessary titty scenes (not so much the mud wrestling sequence, which I understand is deliberately over-the-top, more things like Bill Murray's girlfriend inexplicably walking around half naked, the scene where the Captain is looking through a telescope at some women showering in front of an open window and which made me feel just as disgusting as the Captain for watching, amongst others). The way the Czech army is portrayed as a bunch of completely bumbling idiots, which again is propagandistic. The fact that, A-Team style, there is absolutely no loss of life despite numerous explosions.

It's fun, I liked it, I just wish I had been drinking when I watched it so that my cognitive faculties couldn't take note of these things.

For me this is a film I grew up with, I must of watched it dozens of times when I was younger! I had'nt seen it in a while though so decided to buy it and watch it again hoping that it had not lost any of its charm! It didnt disapoint! Maybe its only cause Im such a huge Murray fan but he never fails to make me crack a smile when he introduces himself and says "Chicks dig me cause I rarely wear underwear and when I do its normally something un-usual!" Its light-hearted and in no way takes itself seriously (which is a very good thing for a film abiout the US army...) and flows along nicely. Definitely a good choice for those lookin for a hour and a half of easy entertainment! (also check a few "boob" shots for those who would be interested in that sort of thing...)

I mainly purchased this film due to the passing away of Harold Ramis and I am glad that I did. It had been many years since I last watched this film and the jokes/performance from Bill Murray/Harold Ramis and the supporting cast was perfect. It was also good to see the deleted scenes, one of which made alot of sense to a certain scene when added. Worth the purchase.

Unfortunetly this is a bore from beginning to end- and personally I love Bill Murray and John Candy movies. The laughs don't come off and the comedy feel is very dated. However what is most jarring about Stripes is Murray's character. He starts the movie off as an arrogant git and ends the same way, nothing is learned in between.

This was a real surprise of a movie, the time period, the director, the actors were all for me- but the film seemed like generic comedy, hardly anything worked. Stripes was a very popular film at the time, and each to their own, but for me this movie did not work at all.
