5.0 out of 5 stars Chromium-plated Bruckner 7, 1 Jul 2008
By Mr. Mark A. Meldon (Somerset UK) - See all my reviews

Although not owning many Karajan CDs, I picked this up for peanuts and I'm very glad I did. The Berlin Philharmoniker always sounds pretty good and here they are like a highly-polished machine (with a beating heart),shining away like chrome.

Recorded in 1970/71 in Berlin, the German engineers managed a truly lovely sound picture. Another reviewer has been a bit negative about the sound - so important in these edifice-like works - but I honestly can't see why. The analogue sound is pretty much perfect and the remastering, although not done for this particular edition (it was done in 1996) has pretty much removed any hiss and there is no "digital glare".

Along with Richard Strauss, Karajan was at his best with Bruckner and this would appear, by common critical consensus, to be his best performance of this great work. The old EMI trump the old DG!

5.0 out of 5 stars Righting a great wrong. This is 'classic' Bruckner., 14 Feb 2008
By Brucknerian (Elgin, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Before launching into the review proper let me mention that Spec*****s are now offering free hearing tests.

Firstly, my credentials for even venturing to comment. I stress I do so purely as a listener and not as a scholar that concerns himself with the minutiae; different versions/editions of the same work etc. etc.

However, I have in my collection six box sets of the complete symphonies plus numerous recordings of each symphony. I feel qualified to comment as I have the three main Karajan recordings to make a comparison. Each has it's own merits. To write this one off is a travesty.

It is true that sonically it can't get near more recent versions like BPO/Wand or VPO/Harnoncourt, both of which are technically brilliant recordings, as well as illuminating performances.

Returning to the present disc, it merits 5 stars as a performance alone. Bruckner's music positively glows in this performance and that's all that matters!

In addition, Karajan IS better than most at communicating Bruckner's grand conception.

Finally, I must strongly disagree that the recorded sound is in any way a drawback. This present transfer is up there with any good transfer of an analogue master. In fact I think they've done a marvellous job.

If you're a true 'Brucknerian' you probably already have this performance in some form but even for the initiate it is a worthwhile starting point, especially so given the modest outlay.

Genuinely 'classic' Bruckner!

1.0 out of 5 stars A soft grained performed lost in cloudy sound, 18 Sep 2007
By Mr. Christian Hoskins (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For some reason I cannot explain, this recording of Bruckner's 7th Symphony is held in high regard by many people. I've always found it curiously lifeless. Part of the problem for me is the quality of the recording. It sounds as if the orchestra was placed at one end of a vast hanger and the microphones at the other end. Many orchestral details simply never manage to penetrate through the reverberation. Just listen to the first minute of the Scherzo here and compare it either of Karajan's two later recordings to hear how much of the orchestral texture is lost in the aural melee.

I've recently come to suspect that Karajan's mellow interpretation is an additional factor accounting for the lack of tension. Either way, I think that his interpretation of the work is much better heard in his 1975 DG recording. However, my favourite version of Bruckner's 7th Symphony is by Barenboim and the Berlin Philharmonic. It captures the mystery and drama of Bruckner's score better than any other version I know.
