5.0 out of 5 stars Why isn't Yuen Biao a super-star?, 7 Mar 2008
By Ashleigh (Scotland) - See all my reviews
The Iceman Cometh is one of those films that you shouldn't take too seriously and will never be hailed as a classic of film-making. However, this film is pure fun, enjoyable from beginning to end.

Yuen Biao stars as Ching, the Chief Royal Guard of the Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. His brother (played by Yuen Wah) is a degenerate rapist and murderer so Ching vows to bring him to the Emperor for punishment. (There's also some guff about the wheel of life and death and a black jade buddha) Anyway, during the ensuing fight both brothers fall over an icy cliff. Cut to 300 years later - the 'icemen' are discovered and thawed out.

What follows is a mixture of really sweet romantic comedy, lots of 'fish out of water' gags and some excellent stunt sequences and martial art fights.

Yuen Biao's abilities as a master acrobat and fighter are showcased magnificently and this will leave you wondering why he never reached the heights of his former schoolmates - Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan.

All in all this is an excellent piece of crowd pleasing - turn your brain off and enjoy it Hong Kong cinema.
