4.0 out of 5 stars Good Game and Seriously Underated, 26 Sep 2005

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The reviews I read before buying this game (here and elsewhere) almost put me off buying - I'm so glad I went ahead and bought it anyway.

Brotherhood of the Blade is a massive what I call hunt 'n' slash RPG. From the start you get to choose one of 4 character types which is great as they have male AND female types to choose from (how sick do I get always having to play a male!) and so I went for the alchemist who starts off a little weak put becomes seriously powerful later in the game due to her ability to cast magic.

Basically the game works like this: you get given quests to undertake by various characters in the game, you solve the quest which normally means hunting down people or things and killing lots in your path and then you move on to the next quest. Along the way you pick up or buy new weapons, armour and potions etc to improve your character.

Many reviews have slated this game for being very linear and, yes, in a sense it is because you basically get told where to go and you go off and complete that quest. This has a positive side - if you hate getting stuck in RPGs and you don't have a clue what you're meant to be doing next, this game would suit you perfectly as it does at least point you in the right direction.

But really the game is as linear as you want to make it because there is literally so much to explore. The different areas are vast and some areas are neatly concealed which adds to the interest when you discover them - tip don't always go by the map!

PROS OF GAME: graphically very nice indeed and detailed over large landscapes, sound effects are great and really add to the atmosphere, this is a huge game with masses to explore, see and do before you can complete it. There are no other games like this available on the PSP right now!

CONS OF GAME: music can be a bit annoying at times but there is a mute button, it's a good game but there will be better RPGs coming to the PSP though I would recommend getting this while you wait!

Overall I think this has been underated - it is a solid good game, not going to win RPG of the year award for innovation but it's still good and I would buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade (PSP), 12 Sep 2005
Graphics are superb, game play for lovers of slash and hack brilliant, but for me the plot is too linear, with no real puzzle solving or intelligence required. I like my RPG's to have more of an adventure game feel with decision making that makes a real difference to the outcome and where the character you develop feels unique. I may be being a bit harsh here because in my experience all console versions suffer this same problem when compared to the PC one. Minor niggles included being "rewarded" with the same piece of armour on more than one occasion for completing a quest; or getting a weapon that was less powerful than one I already had; almost no strategy needed to kill bosses i.e. too easy.
Despite all the above however, I would still say I enjoyed the game and think it was worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the same please, 31 Aug 2005

Having purchased an import PSP I decided to try a game that I thought would appeal to me. Having been a great fan of the Diablo and Neverwinter Nights series of games this seemed an obvious choice.

The emphasis on fun comes into play with this immediately accessible game. There are no laboured tutorials before you are immersed in the action and the controls are easy to pick up quickly. Before you know it time has flown by and you are becoming part of the world of Aven.

The PSP is shown off to full effect with the fighting action and spells shown in all their animated jerk-free graphical beauty. The action seen from a top-down perspective takes place in wonderfully atmospheric rendered landscapes. The sound and the music all combine to draw you into a fun adventure. Quests and side-quests abound in a large map with more to discover the further in you go. There are armour and weapon upgrades and magic and health effects galore with combinations that will fair boggle.

If you are an RPG fan and want a graphically pleasing fun romp on what can only be described as the must-have portable gaming platform then look no further.
