Synopsis

In the autumn of 1986 a unsuspecting TV nation was introduced to a new kind of hero, who made Rambo look like Pee Wee Herman: a trigger-happy lawman whose hatred of criminals is only matched by his love of excessive force. Features episodes from the second series of the programme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best US Comedy Ever, 21 Jun 2005
By Kyassor "kyassor" (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I remember this show when it used to be on in the early hours of the morning when ITV first started broadcasting overnight back in the 80's.

My first memory of it is when the main character 'Sledge Hammer' (a typical US cop :-) ) solves the problem of a sniper on the roof of a building by taking a bazooka out of the back of his car and blowing up the whole building - an instant attention grabber ... and this was about the most serious bit of the show !

The above (I found out when I bought the first series) comes from the first ever episode of the show but I would recommend both series equally as they feature excellent writing & acting throughout and some of the best humour ever seen.

Sledge does everything by the book - unfortunately for him it is not the book that his superiors think he should be following. He is a cop who talks to his gun, gets suspects to beat themselves up, stars in parodies for major films without realising it, is suspended more often than a bridge and does all the stuff we'd like to do but think would be too unreal.

This is the best US comedy show ever - in fact it's the best US show ever. If you believe you know about great comedy then you'll probably own this already - if you don't already own it then I recommend you buy it straight away and find out what you've been missing.

If I were allowed I'd give a money back guarantee on this series of 'Sledge Hammer' or series one but your not paying me so I can't but it is definitely worth it. Trust me .... nah, everyone else will have used that line !

5.0 out of 5 stars More laughs, more guns (but fewer nuclear explosions), 25 Jun 2005
By S. Jones (Devon, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I love this show, so this is not an objective review. But not enough people know about this programme, and I need to be able to go up to complete strangers in the street and say 'Wasn't that one good where Hammer is on the trail of a murderous vampire actor?' or 'What about where Hammer gets suspended and becomes a private eye aided by the ghost of Humphrey Bogart?'. And so on.
No-one expected Sledge Hammer! to return after its first season so the creator Alan Spencer left it at the cliffhanger to end them all, with Hammer apparently detonating a nuclear bomb and obliterating an entire city. When the US network called his bluff and asked for more, Spencer came up with a cheeky get-out which set the tone for the entire series.
Gleeful movie parodies come as thick and as fast as gunfire in this second series, with riffs on Robocop and Crocodile Dundee placing this comedy firmly in its decade, as do the sly political gags peppered liberally (sorry to use that word, Sledge) through the run. A refresher on the Oliver North/Iran-contra scandal might have come in handy as part of the extras, but you can't have everything.
For me this exceeds the overall quality of the first series, with everyone involved knowing better where to pitch the humour. If you're one of those people who hates sitcoms, especially the bland and cosy American ones, then don't be put off because so did Sledge Hammer! This was a pretty subversive network comedy in an era before The Simpsons began pushing back boundaries.
Now before this threatens to become a bad media studies essay, let me give a brief example of the humour. Hammer speaking to suspicious character. 'Just remember you're suspecto numero uno, creep. Every move you make, every breath you take... I'll be watching you.' (Pause.) 'That's Police talk.'
If you're falling about laughing now, then you'll like this.
People, you need this in your dvd player pronto. And so do I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trust me..., 26 Jun 2005
By drutt (tyne - tees) - See all my reviews
If you're here 'cos you saw this show over fifteen years ago: it's as good as you remember - in fact, it's even better than that - buy it now. And series one too while you're here.

Anyone else: read the first review on here by kyassor (who has put out a better synopsis of the show than I ever could). It really is that funny...
