Synopsis

Coming out of the closet may never be easy, and MAMBO ITALIANO takes a comedic look at why it may be even harder for first generation Italian-Canadians. Angelo (Luke Kirby), son of Italian immigrants, realizes at a young age he's gay, and so does everyone else in his Montreal elementary school. Yet somehow his family remains in the dark. After thirty years of living at home with his naive parents (Ginette Reno, Paul Sorvino) and garish sister Anna (Claudia Ferri), Angelo decides to get his own apartment. A burglary re-acquaints Angelo with Nino, his childhood friend (Peter Miller), now a hardbody twentysomething cop. Nino and Angelo quickly fall in love and Nino moves in, but they decide to keep it a secret from their families. After a disastrous dinner party, chaos ensues, sending Angelo and Nino into a vortex of identity politics. The film's colourful sets stand out, decorated with ostentatious wall patterns that reflect Anna's Fendi-esque wardrobe and the bright hues of the landscape. The film exaggerates other various Italian-immigrant stereotypes for comedic effects, but works hard to earn endearing moments of family loyalty, self-searching, and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, brilliant and without complication..., 3 Jan 2006
By K. I. Quintyne "kianq" (Dublin , IRELAND) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun - happy - full of spirit movie that moves effortlessly through the range of issues related to a young gay man coping with finding love (or what he initially thinks is love), coping with his hilarious family's dysfunctional dynamic and finally finding a good solid and stable partnership... oh.. and making a good go at a career...

It avoids the pitfalls of most gay-themed movies, where the main character is limp-wristed, or being brutalised or suffering with a terminal illness - and seeking redemption...

The scenes move effortlessly and tell a great tale... that will keep you rolling around your front room...

Most definately worth repeated viewings...

4.0 out of 5 stars Feel good with a capital F, 1 Aug 2005
By DnA (Chiswick United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic feelgood movie. It should be on any gay person's list of 2005 must sees.

But straight people should not avoid !There is a message for every person, be it from Mediterranean descent to anyone who feels that they don't quite belong.

There will be inevitable comparisons with my Big Greek F W, but it's not a case of seen-one-seen-them-all. You will just love the family, your heart will also ache for the poor confused parents. You just feel like hugging them ,as you reflect on your relationship with your own parents.

Do yourself a favour, and get this movie ASAP into your DVD player, and ENJOY

4.0 out of 5 stars Funnier than My Big Fat Greek Wedding!, 19 Aug 2005
I saw this title through work at a special screening and everyone was laughing out loud throughout. I was really surprised it wasn't more of a success at the box office. It's a little gem, bright, colourful, sweet, funny, a great way to spend an afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cliched: But hey who said cliches aren't fun?
There is nothing terribly ground-breaking or original in this film. Nevertheless, it's absolutely great!

The story doesn't really amount to much. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars coming out with a twist
A feel good coming out kind of movie. But this one with a twist: even if the family and community is hostile it is also a bit mad and exhilaratingly funny. Read more
