Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

With Optical Image Stabilizer (IS), Ultrasonic Motor (USM) and a UD lens element, the PowerShot S2 IS's 12x optical zoom is no ordinary lens. Optical IS works to counteract camera shake - even at full zoom and in low light conditions - for ultra sharp photos and movies. USM provides super responsive, smooth and near silent zoom, while the UD element reduces chromatic aberrations for razor sharp images with superb colour accuracy. A super macro mode allows for precise focusing no matter how close you get to your subject. Combine the powerful lens with capacity to shoot up to 60 minutes of VGA quality movies with full stereo sound. A dedicated movie button gets you shooting immediately in either 15 or 30fps to ensure you never miss those once in a lifetime moments. The Photo In Movie feature allows full resolution digital stills to be taken whilst shooting a movie.

The DIGIC II processor delivers incredible 2.4 fps continuous shooting, super fast auto focus and rapid start up, plus superb colour rendering and white balance accuracy for natural skin tones and rich, vibrant colours. For the ultimate in creative control over digital stills and movies, the PowerShot S2 IS provides 18 shooting modes. These include 6 Special Scene modes for great results in tricky lighting conditions, and My Colors for special effect colour swapping and manipulation. Direct manual control is available over a multitude of settings, such as focus, IS mode, shutter speed and aperture, and audio sampling rate. A 1.8" vari-angle LCD maximises shooting and playback pleasure, with Night Display for improved visibility in low light.

Extend your zoom range to a staggering 27mm - 648mm with optional wide and tele converter lenses. Other optional accessories available include a close-up lens and High-Power Flash. For your post-shooting creativity, a variety of editing software is included and you can also print direct without a PC to any PictBridge or Canon Direct Print compatible photo printer. Canon iMAGE Gateway provides access to 100MB of internet storage for images, and movies - perfect for sharing with friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camera, 20 Jul 2005
    By A Customer
The next few years will see the price of digital SLRs drop significantly with the quality steadily rising. If, like me, you have been waiting to buy one, I would advise waiting for a couple more years and in the meantime buy a S2. Don't however see it just as a half way house to a SLR - it's lighter and less bulky.

Superb crisp pictures with very realistic colouring. Extremely quick and powerful zoom and loads of features to keep you entertained.

As others have mentioned it's not perfect - the body is plastic. However my last powershot was plastic has has put up with being dropped repeatedly, used in very hot, cold and humid conditions and still carries on.

Considering what you're getting for the price it's a bargain.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Canon's crossover, 29 Jun 2005
By Simon G (Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews
With its' rich feature list and robust shooting performance the S2 IS covers all my digital image needs. From high quality 5mp still pictures with full auto to full manual control - and every conceivable option in between - to 640x480 stereo video pictures.

The lens is an ultra quiet 36-432mm (35mm equivalent) F2.7easily at hand with the ability to customise a function button to your preference.

The tilt and swivel LCD - similar to many video cameras - allows a different angle to your photos.

The cameras features and abilities greatly outstrip mine, but I hope I can grow into it over the next few years, rather tahn growing out of it in a few months.

In the two weeks I have owned it I have never been short of delighted with the results and continue to discover new features.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent lower-cost alternative to digital SLR, 7 Jul 2005
After seriously considering a digital SLR I decided on the S2 IS. It won over the similar spec Lumix on the tilt & swivel LCD. We've now been on a 1 day photography course which has shown us how to use the excellent features of this camera. It feels well made, has excellent functionality and takes stunning pictures. And it can be as complicated or simple as you wish. I love both the 12x zoom and the super-macro (0-10cm). I'd recommend a tripod for really good photos. Very pleased and impressed; the only minor disappointment is the flash doesn't pop-up manually - but that's a minor niggle. If you can afford it do a short photography course and use with Photoshop Elements to get amazing photos! An all round great camera.
