4.0 out of 5 stars MOTORING QUITE NICELY!!!, 21 Oct 2006
By Stotty (Bolton, England) - See all my reviews
After parting company with EMI and going 'indie', Marillion had to come up with something good. This Strange Engine provides the listener with Marillions most commercial moments since Holidays In Eden. The album is a surprisingly laid back, acoustic guitar based effort, but the songs are terrific. Man Of A Thousand Faces is excellent, starting out as acoustic guitar pop number and ending up as a seven minute plus epic complete with choir.
One Fine Day is a traditional Marillion ballad with a bluesy whiff. 80 Days is classic Crowded House. Estonia is a beautifully dark anthem that wouldn't sound out of place on Brave. Accidental Man is a good rocky work out that I find reminiscent of The Police at their most enrgetic, and the title track is the longest, most proggy track the band have knocked out since 1982's fondly remembered Grendel. The only let down, song-wise is Hope For The Future. Marillion doing samba is frankly the stuff of nightmares. Also Memory Of Water is quite forgettable (I prefer the big beat version).
The biggest let down on this album is the weak, limp wristed production. Ian Mosley's drums have never sounded so wet. Just compare the sound on this album with the sound on Clutching At Straws and Brave if you don't believe me!
Luckily, the songs are so good that you can forgive that one...just.
Perfect for a balmy summers evening.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Engine, 29 Sep 2006
By N. Mason (Taunton, Somerset United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Following the superb 'Brave' and the even better 'Afriad of Sunlight' was never going to be easy but Marillion managed it by trying something a bit different whilst maintaining the high levels of musicianship that highlighted the previous two albums. In many ways I feel this album has been passed over by many people and has not received the credit it deserves. 'Man of a 1000 Faces' is a superb opener with its cracking acoustic guitar and vocals building through the track. '80 Days' is a tribute to their fans across the world. 'Estonia' and 'Memory of Water' are attempts to do something differently and they succeed on all levels. 'Hope for the Future' is probably the weakest track on the album but even that has grown on me over the years. The album ends with the title track - 15 minutes of Marillion at their best. I am sure many will look at it as being self-indulgent because it is so long -I just think it is a great piece of music played and sung by a band on top form and enjoying themselves.

This is an excellent album that deserves and rewards frequent listens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Post Fish High Water Mark, 6 May 2009
By I. A. Mcfarlane "iain3612" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Of all the Marillion albums this one seems to have the highest level of personal depth. The music is beautifully crafted, wistful, thoughtful and totally engaging/absorbing. But what draws you in is the general lyrical themes, particularly those drawn on childhood experiences and the fragility of life. There are phrases in here that resonate like poetry and are beautifully observed (reminding me of the start of Joyce's Portrait of an Artist on some of the childhood observations)- this is particularly true of Estonia and the epic title track, which clocks in at a magnificent 15 minutes. The only real trip-up is the awkward and out of place Hope for The Future which jars with it's hurried and weak chorus built on a dire Carribean sound. This aside, this is a really great cd whatever Marillion cd you care to compare it to.
