Synopsis
In 1917, Russian revolutionaries overthrew the last czar, Nicholas, imprisoning him and his family and executing them one year later. Shortly thereafter, rumours began to spread that one of the czar's daughters, Anastasia, was still alive. In 1928, a woman surfaced claiming to be Anastasia. Based on the play, and the fictionalized account of actual events, ANASTASIA tells the story of Anna (Ingrid Bergman), the impoverished, suicidal Russian woman living in Paris who believes she may be Anastasia. When ex-military leader General Bounin, deftly played by Yul Brynner, and his cohorts discover Anna, they convince her, through grueuling training sessions, that she is, in fact, the real princess. Yet Anna's own unmistakable memories unnerve even the general who, upon finding her, believed she was only a fake. The climax of the film, in which the Dowager Empress (Helen Hayes), who is still alive, meets Anastasia, is poignant and riveting. Shot on location in Paris, director Anatole Litvak commands incomparable performances from Bergman, Hayes, and Brynner in this captivating tale of lost identity. Bergman won her second Oscar for her winning portrayal that introduces just the right regal note of doubt about her real heritage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Now that we know the truth..., 7 Nov 2006
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Anatole Litvak's 1956 Anastasia was Ingrid Bergman's big comeback vehicle after being cast into the moral void for running off with Roberto Rossellini, but it's Helen Hayes' performance that really gives the film its heart and its best scenes. Now that the story of Anna Anderson's claim to the title and inheritance of Tsar Nicholas' daughter has been completely debunked by DNA tests it's more a bit of wish-fulfilment than a compelling mystery, and one that doesn't go out of its way to disguise its theatrical origins - despite the lavish CinemaScope lensing, it rarely strays outdoors unless it's absolutely necessary for a brief establishing shot. Yul Brynner and Akim Tamiroff do their party pieces (stern precision and comically nervous dishonesty) and Bergman fares much better doing imperious than impoverished in a classy production that goes down smoothly but doesn't linger long in the memory.

Fox's DVD suffers from an atrocious remix in the opening reel where the music and effects track are amplified while the dialog is reduced to a barely audible whisper even at full volume, a problem that doesn't affect the rest of the film but is irritating as hell while it lasts. As usual with Fox's classics titles, aside from the trailer all the extras from the US release (documentary, audio commentary, newsreels) have been dropped.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid film making but central premise now outdated, 26 Mar 2009
By Humpty Dumpty (Wall St, Upton Snodsbury) - See all my reviews
As Trevor says, the raison d'etre of this film's plot, the enigma of Anastasia's identity, has been nullified by the progress of DNA science.

So the question becomes whether the interest to be found in its other elements justifies the watching, and my answer would on be: on the whole, yes. Again as Trevor says, the film is quite studio-bound, which is a pity as the outdoor scenes of Paris are atmospheric but relatively few, so that one wonders why they went to the trouble and expense of filming on location at all. The set and costume designs are lavish, the music delightful, the script quite sharp and the acting good. Yul Brynner is himself, as always; a good example of a lucrative career built on a small hoard of gold. I think he must have had a clear idea of his own limits and then determined to stay within them (and he probably had a good agent). His character of a Russian military attache as he plays him here is really not all that different from the robot gunslinger he played in Westworld!

As an Ingrid Bergman fan, how could I carp about her here? She's a bit shaky in the downtrodden refugee scenes at the start, and maybe those nuits de folie with Roberto Rossellini made her teeth rattle, as she takes time to settle down! People looking here for a performance approaching the heights of, say, Notorious will look in vain.
