5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic rock n roll!, 1 Jun 2005
absolutley fantastic debut from the new album 'get behind me satan' with the blistering rock and roll sounds of elephant at the soul of this track, but dont be fooled by this single, the album is a return to the piano and acoustic based sounds of the first two albums 'the white stripes' and 'de stijl' however still fantasitic and with this fantastic band there is always the chance it could be the last album, so enjoy them while they're here!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic single, 2 Aug 2005
By Mr. Marc Mulholland - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Blue Orchid (Audio CD)
This is the best version of the new single from The White Stripes, Blue Orchid. This is the US version which contains all the songs from the two UK versions, on one CD.

Blue Orchid is a fantastic retro song which represents The White Stripes beautifully, and it is a great if slightly misleading taster of the latest album Get Behind Me Satan.

Though I Hear You Calling, I Will Not Answer is a truly unique song. Jack sings against his own voice disguised with a chipmunk voice. It is really inspired, without the chipmunk it would have been a great song in its own right, with guitar, marimba, but this quirky addition makes it even better. Jack has also messed with the stereo mix so that each speaker/headphone plays a different part of the song, making it very interesting.

Who's A Big Baby? is even more of a risk, perhaps not quite as fulfilling but still very funny and unusual. Meg takes lead vocals and she is speaking through a kazoo, accompanied by a very whimsical tune on the marimba and guitar. It's hard to determine the exact meaning of the song, I suspect it's the band's response to people who criticise them. And it totally works.

There is also a live version of You've Got Her In Your Pocket, from the album Elephant, included. I was actually at this gig and although it is a good song this isn't the best song of theirs I've heard live. Don't get me wrong, it's nice but this isn't the most memorable version.

This single mixes some unusual but very memorable efforts in Though I Hear You Calling... and Who's A Big Baby? with more conventional offerings, making it an essential package for fans of the band as well as people who might want to try out some daring, satisfying music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basically a promo for the album..., 2 Aug 2005
By Mr. Marc Mulholland - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Blue Orchid [7" VINYL] (Vinyl)
The White Stripes have returned in glorious fashion. This is the vinyl version of the single "Blue Orchid" which is taken from the new album "Get Behind Me Satan". This single also features another song from the album, "The Nurse".

"Blue Orchid" is a really unique song, The White Stripe's take on 70's disco rock. "The Nurse" is a revelation as it is driven by marimba chords, and this is one instrument that will feature very prominently on "Get Behind Me Satan". The whimsical sound of the marimba is broken up by short bursts of intense drumming and guitar, and accompanied by sinister lyrics.

Basically, taken at face value this is an incredible single. However, if you do buy the album on CD then there isn't much need to buy this. However the album hasn't been released on vinyl yet, and no-one is sure whether it will be, so this may be just the thing for people who prefer vinyl. If you intend to buy the album on CD, you may want to consider buying one of the CD versions instead for the b-sides.
