A fantastic single, 2 Aug 2005
This is the best version of the new single from The White Stripes, Blue Orchid. This is the US version which contains all the songs from the two UK versions, on one CD.Blue Orchid is a fantastic retro song which represents The White Stripes beautifully, and it is a great if slightly misleading taster of the latest album Get Behind Me Satan. Though I Hear You Calling, I Will Not Answer is a truly unique song. Jack sings against his own voice disguised with a chipmunk voice. It is really inspired, without the chipmunk it would have been a great song in its own right, with guitar, marimba, but this quirky addition makes it even better. Jack has also messed with the stereo mix so that each speaker/headphone plays a different part of the song, making it very interesting. Who's A Big Baby? is even more of a risk, perhaps not quite as fulfilling but still very funny and unusual. Meg takes lead vocals and she is speaking through a kazoo, accompanied by a very whimsical tune on the marimba and guitar. It's hard to determine the exact meaning of the song, I suspect it's the band's response to people who criticise them. And it totally works. There is also a live version of You've Got Her In Your Pocket, from the album Elephant, included. I was actually at this gig and although it is a good song this isn't the best song of theirs I've heard live. Don't get me wrong, it's nice but this isn't the most memorable version. This single mixes some unusual but very memorable efforts in Though I Hear You Calling... and Who's A Big Baby? with more conventional offerings, making it an essential package for fans of the band as well as people who might want to try out some daring, satisfying music.
