Product Description

Album Description

Debut ECM album of a most highly regarded American composer, described in the New York Times as one of the US's "young lions". Stephen Hartke's Tituli / Cathedral In The Thrashing Rain was originally issued on SACD only in the USA in 2003 and now gets its first CD release.

It features world premiere recordings of moving pieces written expressly for the Hilliard Ensemble and violinist Michelle Makarski, artists very familiar to huge numbers of ECM listeners. This disc can also be warmly recommended to anyone who, for instance, enjoys the music of Arvo Pärt.

'Tituli', with texts based on fragments of Roman inscriptions, is scored for five solo male voices, violin and percussion. 'Cathedral In The Thrashing Rain' sets the modernist Japanese poetry of Takamura Kotaro (in English translation) for the Hilliard Ensemble.

Release of the recording in the US enhanced Hartke's growing reputation and, early in 2004, he won the prestigious Charles Ives Award, one of America's biggest music prizes (worth $250,000).

Stephen Hartke was born in New Jersey in 1952, grew up in New York, and has been based in California for 20 years. There he met and befriended Michelle Makarski, who was amongst the first artists to record his work - the title track of her 1995 recital disc 'Caoine'.

Makarski, who first came to ECM playing music by Keith Jarrett (on 'Bridge of Light') has since been widely recognised as an outstanding violinist, able to play in the most diverse contexts. She appears as an improviser on Tomasz Stanko's prize-winning 'From The Green Hill' while her solo albums explore aspects of Western music from Tartini to Elliott Carter. The renowned violinist recently recorded a new album contrasting Tartini's music with that of American composer Donald Crockett. Crockett is also present here, as conductor.

Recorde 2003

Personnel:
The Hilliard Ensemble: David James - (countertenor), Rogers Covey-Crump, Steven Harrold, Andreas Hirtreiter - (tenor), Gordon Jones - (baritone)

Michelle Makarski - (violin), Lynn Vartan, Javier Diaz - (percussion), Donald Crockett - (conductor)
