Product Description

Album Description
• Compiled by Gaz Mayall, eldest son of blues legend John Mayall, and owner of the legendary London club "Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues", this CD updates the original LP released in 1981.

• The first 14 tracks replicate the 1981 release, and Gaz has selected a further 14 for this CD. Eleven tracks are new to CD, including John Lee Hooker’s sensational ‘Shake, Holler And Run’.

• Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and Gaz tells the club’s story in his entertaining and lavishly illustrated sleeve notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must have for any ska/blues fan!, 16 Feb 2006
By Mr. T. Mccrow "tmccr" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've been a frequenter of Gaz's Rockin' Blues at the St Moritz club for quite some time now, and never miss an opportunity to see Gaz's band 'The Trojans' play who've never let me down for an amazing show. As an obsessive ska and rhythm and blues fan me and my co-DJ have amassed together a huge collection of ska and rhythm and blues on both CD and 45s but there are a few tracks on this inredible compilation that we've never been able to find that Gaz or Natty are always playing at the St Moritz on Thursday nights, most notably 'The Walkin Blues (Walk Right In, Walk Right Out)' which we've desperately searched for some copy of for too long, our only success being an out of print nasty r'n'b collection on Amazon called 'Risque Rhythm' that some soul was selling for £80 odd. Of course we wanted it bad, but our pockets aren't that deep.

If you're a fan of rhythm and blues or ska (the second CD as you may have noticed is mainly old ska records) then this is definitely a must have compilation that I was hoping to buy from the Trojans gig at the 100 club recently but in the end had to buy online.

Buy this now.

4.0 out of 5 stars slightly odd mixture of the huge and the obscure but very nice, 11 Dec 2006
By freewheeling frankie (north London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This generously-filled 2 CD compilation from the reggae reissue label Trojan was compiled by Gaz Mayall, son of the British blues artist John Mayall and purveyor of the eponymous weekly club night of the title in London's Soho since 1980. The music policy of the club is mostly vintage rhythm & blues and ska, and this CD features a generous stack of tunes popular at the club. It's basically divided into one CD of r&b and one CD of ska but, while I don't want to be too purist about it, the selection is, to my ears, slightly marred by the inclusion of a few records that stand out like the proverbial sore thumb. On CD 1, these include The Kinks' "All Day And All Of The Night" and The 101ers' (Joe Strummer's pre-Clash pub rock band) "Sweetie Of The St Moritz", a tribute to the owner of the venue in which Gaz's club currently appears. Fine records both, and while there can't be many people out there who don't have the Kinks tune, the 101ers one is a pleasant bonus - they just seem very out of place here. Likewise The Specials' excellent "Too Much Too Young" which opens the second disc.

Mr Mayall has also taken the opportunity to include a track by his own band, The Trojans, as well as one by his father, and while both of these are perfectly respectable, they also seem vaguely out of place. But having said all that, nearly 90% of the album consists of fine selections of 40s and 50s r&b and original Jamaican ska from the 60s, including many tracks that are impossibly rare and have not previously been compiled, at least on a well-mastered CD - however full of himself Gaz Mayall may be (check the sleevenotes), the enduring popularity of his club and the overall quality of all the compilations I own for which he has been responsible (at least 4 including this one) suggest that he has good reason for his self-regard.
