Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Surely it has to be every producer or remixer’s dream to get their hands on the master reels locked away in the vaults at Motown. A sound unto itself, Motown spawned some of the most enduring hits of the last 40 years featuring iconic artists such as the Jackson 5, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye.

Z-Trip’s remix of "I Want You Back" opens the album and treats the original with the respect it deserves. Kicking off with the famous guitar lick--the subtleties of which are lost in the original wall of sound--it features vocal outtakes and an infectious drum loop that sounds super-sweet when pitched against the instruments recorded over 30 years previously. There are no tasteless mixes here even though it would’ve been easy to stick a domineering breakbeat in; but the good people of Motown chose their collaborators wisely. King Britt’s version of Edwin Starr’s "War" could easily lend itself to a tribal house rhythm yet restraint was shown and the result even more brooding and intense than the original mix.

As with the original Verve Remixed compilation, when there’s such a vast catalogue of quality material to choose from it’d be tricky to make anything sound bad and Motown remixed is no different. Highlights are tricky to choose as it’s all fantastic, it just depends whether you prefer listening to Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder or whoever else. There’s nothing here to enrage die-hard fans: even if you like the originals better, these mixes are a joy. --David Trueman

2.0 out of 5 stars The originals are still the greatest, 25 Aug 2005
By David Spanswick (Brighton United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had been looking forward to this album for a long time. I have enjoyed the Verve remixed series but these really just go to show how great the originals were because these remixes are just not very good. At best they are like the 12 inch remixes played in clubs and at worst, not naming any specific tracks they are tedious. A failed experiment...back to the old vinyl singles I think

5.0 out of 5 stars THATS MO' LIKE IT!!!, 5 Jun 2005
I just ordered this from the US cause i could not stand the wait any longer, and boy am i glad i did.
I am the biggest fan of neo-soul acts like van hunt and jill scott etc, etc but motown is where it all spawned from and being a white boy i wont start to talk about stuff that i dont know that much about LOL but all i can say is that with this album they took all that was good about motown and the artists, writers, producers, etc and updated them to give them a contemporary feel, obviously u cant recreate the splendour of the originals but go ahead i challenge you to put marvin gaye's 'let's get it on' in the CD player and not instantly take to the floor shakin ur booty,

...all the tracks sound kinda similar to the original but just have a little extra and it gives them a fresh feel and i think is a great way to get today's generation into soul and motown especially.

if i could make one complaint which isnt a big one but how could they not have remixed marvin gaye's version of heard it through the grapevine, no offence to gladys but thats his song yunno ... sayin that its a minor complaint.

I have only listened so far to four tracks cause well, it arrived this morning haha but as far as im concerned if u like motown or soul or just anything with a good beat, and a heartfelt message then do urself a favour and buy this...
