Amazon.co.uk Review
Meet the Parents found such tremendous success in the chemistry produced by the contrasting personalities of stars Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller that the film's creators went for broke with the same formula again in Meet the Fockers. This time around, Jack and Dina Byrnes (De Niro and Blythe Danner) climb into Jack's new kevlar-lined RV with daughter Pam (Teri Polo), soon-to-be son-in-law Gaylord (Stiller), and Jack's infant grandson from his other daughter for the trip to Florida to meet Gaylord's parents, Bernie and Roz Focker (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand in a casting coup). The potential in-laws are, of course, the opposite of Jack, a pair of randy, touchy-feely fun-lovers. The rest of the movie is pretty much a sitcom: put Bernie and Roz together with Jack, and watch the in-laws clash as Gaylord squirms. As with the original, there is a sense of joy in watching these actors take on their roles with obvious relish, and the Hoffman-Streisand-Stiller triumvirate is likeable enough to draw you in. But the formula doesn't work as well in Fockers mostly because much of the humor is based on two obvious gimmicks: Gaylord Focker's name, and the fact that Streisand's character is a sex therapist. As a result, the movie itself is more contrived and predictable, and a lot less fun than the original. The casting is grand, but one wishes more thought was put into the script.--Dan Vancini, Amazon.com

Synopsis
Following the knee-slapping hit MEET THE PARENTS, director Jay Roach once again keeps audiences roaring with laughter as he presents MEET THE FOCKERS. This time, young engaged couple Pam (Teri Polo) and Greg (Ben Stiller) are getting their parents together a few months before the wedding. Greg nervously plans out every detail of the trip, only to be usurped by Pam's domineering ex-CIA-man father (Robert DeNiro). Not only has he purchased an RV, insisting they'll be driving from New York City to the Fockers' home in Miami, but he's bringing along his perfect baby grandson. When they finally arrive at the Fockers' house, Greg's parents, Bernie and Roz (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand), turn out to be sex-addicted hippies and not at all what the Byrnes (DeNiro and Blythe Danner) had expected. With one pitfall after the next, the film takes the concept of awkward in-law experiences to new heights, leaving no stone unturned from stories about past sexual experiences to detailed discussion of current ones. What's worse, the Fockers are teaching the baby curse words weaning him on rum, to the shock of his overprotective grandparents. Every conversation is totally inappropriate and downright embarrassing, keeping audiences braced for the next disaster. Along the way, all six cast members turn in topnotch performances, with Hoffman, Streisand, and Stiller leading the charge in true Focker spirit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical Sequel to a great film, 9 May 2005
By M. Halsall "halsallms" (leicester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am surprised by the numberr of positive reviews on this film as I was hugely disappointed. I though Meet the Parents was an excellent film, where you constantly have a grin on your face as you see Ben Stiller squirm trying to make a good impression. Meet the Fockers with Dustin Hoffman I though would be an excellent combination but the film was badly written and there were several factors that brought it down. Firstly it annoyed me that throughout the film they were constantly trying to remind you of funny episodes from the first film, instead of creating there own funny episodes, really treating the audience by dumming down the plot. For instance the air hostess, the small dog to compliment the Mr Jinx and the american football game to replicate the water polo match. This lost both the originality and humour. Also I found the Fockers (Streisand and Hoffman) not really that funny, you could see how they were making complete opposites to Robert De Niro's family but the spark wasn't there. I also think that the film went on a tangent sometimes and had some really silly plot twists that weren't as consistent as the structured Meet the Parents film. Overall Meet the Fockers is one to watch then forget about, I will still watch Meet the Parents on DVD and leave Meet the Fockers for the cupboard

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing sequal, 16 Jun 2005
By Dr. Richard J. Pickard (Winchester, UK.) - See all my reviews

This is a fairly disappointing sequal. I would have given the original 4 stars. There is really little new in this film and what there is, is just too far fetched. His parents are just too strange to be believable. For me the charm of the original was that De Niro plays a nightmare potential father in law. That is something quite a few people may be able to identify with. I don't think anyone will be able to identify with the Fockers as there characters are to be frank just silly and unrealistic. De Niro trots out the same sort of stuff from the first film which just about keeps it watchable but only just.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vastly underrated light-hearted comedy, 28 May 2006
By Mr. C. Bunch "mr_c1999" (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly, I can't understand some of the harsh criticism of this film which is not intended to be a cinematic classic, no it is meant to be a light hearted family comedy. The plot development and serious acting qualities are put to one side to make a funny movie. On this basis it is an unbridled success. I laughed out loud at many points and thought De Niro and Stiller were fantastic, whoever played Stiller's father was great too! The clash of personalities between Stiller and De Niro was genius. De Niro can really turn his hand to any role he wants, a true legend of our time. Sure there were some lame parts, the ending became too mushy and some parts did feel a little laboured. I wouldn't go and buy this planning on watching it over and over but it's certainly a good piece of entertainment and I would definitely see it again. So lay off critics and enjoy it for what it is!
