The story is of a guy who works as a gardener. But due to his ugly appearance and disability he's constantly made fun of and bullied. However, he has an alter ego and when in this identity he goes on a killing spree murdering all those that made fun of him before..
Coming out about 1977 "The Love Butcher" is a proto type slasher that I like. I know it's cheap looking and has its floors,but to me, it's an entertaining watch all the same. There are some enjoyable deaths and with various garden implements used for the carnage the killings are quite inventive although not too bloody. It's a trashy and sleazy affair, but the film has charm and it's definitely enjoyable and fun.
Dvd quality isn't great but I think this release is the only one out there.

After being cruelly spoken down to by women, a physically & mentally handicapped gardener becomes a handsome but violent serial killer whop then attacks and kills the women.

An incredibly strange serial killer film that is very difficult to characterise. The story & events make it sound like a slasher horror but what we see is very different, there is quite a lot of very dark humour (none of it really comes off), the dual personality dramatic stuff is effective at times but after a while loses its edge and the "horror" isn't really, it may work better if viewed as a dark psycho drama but the kooky dialogue lightens it a bit too much. What really does irritate though is the poor acting, apart from the lead and a couple of others the performances are barely passable, Erik Stern though as the lead Caleb/Lester is frankly excellent and is a real surprise, surrounded by such mediocre turns he really does impress and gives an incredibly believable performance and carries the film very well. Coming in at under 90mins so it's not exactly long but the pacing makes it fell a lot longer than it really is, it has a few too many set up scenes that go on a little too long, Lester is an effective villain though and when he's around there is a fairly creepy tension. The police investigation seems a bit like an afterthought, for the majority of the time nothings coming together for them, and apart from a reporter they don't really seem that concerned, but in the last 10-15mins everything comes in line (a bit too conveniently) and this part of the story does feel a bit rushed & unbelievable.Read more ›

This is quite a keeper. Erik Stern's performance as Caleb/Lester is mesmerizing. The story is about a split personality gardener whose alter personality is that of a sexist pig named Lester.

Lester's primary targets all seem to be loose women who are more than willing to break their wedding vows with a quick roll in the Hay. The acting in this is passable considering this was during the 70's. As stated Stern's performance is the best here especially his vocal confrontations with his evil self (including a memorable mirror scene where we see the guy totally lose it).

The cops in this move have depth but unfortunately like other serial killer movies are made to look dumb. Still Donald M. Jones who did the popular "Schoolgirls in Chains" knows how to deliver quite an entertaining movie.

The Love Butcher is a truly remarkable film. It has the ugliest sets I have ever seen - and as a bonus, they are all real places. This movie is a fabulous showcase of everything that was wrong with interior design in the early 1970s. Unfortunately it has never had an official DVD release, so the only way to see it is on poorly mastered discs like this one. The copy of the movie that I got was dubbed from the VHS, and as a result the awfulness of the sets (especially the wallpaper) is somewhat diffused. Other than the poor image quality this was a good deal - and frankly, you probably aren't going to find this available any other way. So if you are a fan of bad cinema, you should definitely buy this film, it is fantastic! Hopefully it will one day get the DVD release it deserves!

The Love Butcher has a great story, great acting by the lead character, and the only pitfalls are the sound synch and the fact that this should have been letterbox. The extras also are lacking. This would have been great with commentary from anyone involved, especially the cast.

The scene with Stern and Robin Sherwood alone is priceless.
