4.0 out of 5 stars Best Batman Game Yet!, 3 Aug 2005
By N. Williams "the_shakermaker" (Hull) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Based on the film 'Batman Begins', this game has breathed new life into the stealth genre. Indeed, on first play you could be mistaken for thinking you're playing Splinter Cell or Metal gear (dark locations, stealthy sneaking, figure hugging rubber, it's all here!). Rather than taking an all out action approach like previous Batman games, this follows the film's tack of Batman using fear to fight his enemies. Charge in and you'll be shot to ribbons, frighten your enemies into dropping their guns and they'll be easy pickings. The developers have littered each level with objects which can be manipulated to scare your enemies which i won't spoil for you here, suffice to say that they've been quite imaginative, and each is like a small puzzle as you work out how to get past your enemies and into a position to scare them. The actual action itself is also superb and when you leap in to fight its incredibly gratifying as you send thugs flying and chase them as they cower in terror. On top of this you can use further measures to scare and impede your enemies such as smoke grenades and flash bangs, plus, the more scared they are of you, the easier the fight is. Great! Then there's the Batmobile! There are 2 fast and furious driving levels in which you get behind the wheel of this monster and tear up the streets of Gotham. Its very linear and simple but looks fantastic and i defy anyone to say that they didn't enjoy flying about in a huge tank at 120mph knocking every other car off the road.
On top of the fun gameplay the whole thing also looks stunning. All the characters and locations have been recreated immaculately and the look of the film is beautifully retained. Add to this all of the original voice talent from the film and you really have got the full genuine article. its all very impressive.
What's less impressive is the game's lifespan. Give it a good hammering and you can finish it very quickly. Even if you take your time to absorb it's full brilliance (and there is a lot), the whole thing seems to go at a breakneck pace and as a result you can finish it a little too quickly. There are also no alternative routes to aid replayability. That said there are time attack modes for the Batmobile levels to provide a little longevity and the whole thing is such good fun that you'll want to keep coming back.
Overall this is a superb film to game port and captures everything great about the film. The experience is a little short-lived but you'll be guaranteed to have a great time while it lasts and it should keep us avid fans happy. The best game yet, lets just hope that the next ones a bit longer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic game!, 16 Jun 2005
By A Customer
I've just finished the game and i have to say this is really great!
It really fits in well with the film, using the same actors voices and the characters look very similiar to their real-life counterparts.

As well as Batman, you get to play as Bruce Wayne in training before he becomes batman and also as Bruce in a tuxedo in a level which has the Wayne Manor in flames. Very cool.

The driving bits are great fun as well, very Burnout, with extra racing modes being unlocked after you beaten those levels.

The main gameplay consists of a mixture of combat and stealth. If Batman comes accross a group of heavily armed enemies, he will end up dyingh if he tries to tackle them directly. you need to use stealth to sneak up on them or even beter use your fear-gadgets or a batarang on your surroundings (e.g throw your batarang at a gas-pipe to burst it), to scare them a bit beforehand, making defeating the enemies easier.

The game isn't too difficult (though the combat seems to be a lot tougher in Challenging mode) and took me about 9 or 10 hours to beat in Normal mode.

The graphics are simply amazing. The levels graphics are some of the best i've seen on a PS2 game and the Batman charcater looks very cool in his bausuit and cape.

The game could have had a bit less linear with more ways of solving the situations that you come accross but at least it means you never get stuck for too long.

The controls are pretty straight forward, with 2 butons for combat (punch & kick) as well as another button for soing special finishing moves and other buttons for batarang and fear gadgets.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Game, 7 Aug 2005
This is a really good game to buy, the graphics are good nd game play is also good. The game is a bit like Splinter cell in ways where u have to sneak around and sneak on people, but it is still original and follows the movie, the only thing i didnt like was how short it was. a good buy
